Sometimes the starting point is nothing more complicated than a color.

For this Seven Seas portrait, the warm pinks and reds became a counterpoint to the water—a character who feels almost born from the last light of sunset.

Creative projects don't always begin with a fully formed idea. Sometimes you start with one interesting choice and simply keep asking, “What comes next?”

Sometimes a mermaid just wants to enjoy the view.

Not every Seven Seas portrait needed an ancient legend or elaborate mythology behind it. Sometimes the idea was simply: mermaid.

And then the fun became figuring out what our mermaid looked like, where we might find her, and what she was doing when we happened upon her.

A simple idea is still an idea. What matters is what you do with it.

Every journey has a price.

This Seven Seas portrait was inspired by Charon, the ferryman of Greek mythology who carried the dead across the rivers of the underworld—for those who could pay the fare.

Sometimes a single object can tell the whole story. A coin, an outstretched hand, and suddenly we know exactly what comes next.

Some mermaids belong near the shore. Others belong somewhere much deeper.

For this Seven Seas portrait, I wanted to imagine a mermaid shaped by the world beneath the surface—ethereal, mysterious, and perhaps a little otherworldly. A creature who looks as though the sea isn't simply where she lives, but where she belongs.

Take a familiar idea somewhere unfamiliar, and it can become new again.

Beauty has had many birthplaces. In one of the oldest stories, she came from the sea.

This Seven Seas portrait was inspired by Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty, and her legendary birth from the waters—represented here by the pearl she holds.

Sometimes one small symbol is enough to connect a portrait to a story that has been told for thousands of years.

Sometimes the fantasy is the whole point.

For this Seven Seas portrait, my client had a very specific request: she wanted to feel like the Queen of the Seas.

So that's exactly what we made her.

Creative portraiture gives us the freedom to step outside the world as it is and create the one we want to see. For a little while, you can be absolutely anything.

Alone Against the Sea

Not every legend begins with a hero seeking adventure. Sometimes the adventure comes looking for you.

A lone Viking, a dragon-headed ship, and a sea that clearly has no intention of cooperating. This was another of my Seven Seas explorations—less about recreating a particular story and more about borrowing the visual language of Norse legend to create one of my own.

Sometimes mythology gives you the story. Sometimes it just gives you permission to invent one.

The Woman in the Jade Dress wasn't actually wearing jade.

Her dress was bright blue—and we deliberately matched the makeup to it, knowing from the beginning that I'd be changing both in Photoshop to create the jade palette I wanted for Chalchiuhtlicue.

That's an important part of creative portraiture: not everything has to be finished when you press the shutter. Sometimes you're photographing the pieces you need to build the image you've already imagined.

The sea has never been obligated to make its monsters frightening.

For this Seven Seas portrait, the tentacles gave us the creature—but the expression gave us the character. Mischievous, strange, and perhaps just a little too pleased that you've wandered into her part of the ocean.

Creating a character is more than deciding what they look like. You have to decide who they are.

Some legends come with a warning: don't follow the song.

This Seven Seas portrait was inspired by the classic siren—beautiful, dangerous, and waiting at the water's edge for someone foolish enough to come closer.

Old myths endure because they leave room for us to imagine them again. The story may be ancient. The picture doesn't have to be.
