September is World Alzheimer’s Month. 💜
In honor, here’s a recently produced mission film for a Dallas nonprofit, Dementia Care Warriors, built entirely around dementia family caregivers, and the founder’s story stayed with us.
She was a marketing director in Chicago. Then her mother and grandmother were both diagnosed. She came home, and she’s been a full-time caregiver for 13 years.
Somewhere in there, she realized the people caring for loved ones with dementia had almost nothing built for them. So she built it herself.
A few things we learned making this film:
Nearly 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. Black Americans are twice as likely to develop it than any other group. Almost two-thirds of the people living with it are women.
And behind nearly every one of them is a caregiver holding it all together, usually without anyone asking how they’re doing.
One line from the film we haven’t stopped thinking about: “Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It is a badge of survival.”
This is the work we’re proudest of, because of what it’s built to do. A film like this goes in front of funders, grant committees, and partners, and it helps an organization keep the doors open for the people who need them.
If you know a caregiver this month, check on them. đź’ś
