There are moments in landscape photography when the scene seems to change faster than you can react.

A storm was moving across the Utah desert; the foreground suddenly caught that wonderful late light, and beneath the rain, not one, but two rainbows began to appear. Look closely, and you can also see cloud-to-cloud lightning threading through the storm.

For a few minutes, everything came together: the darkness of the clouds, the warmth of the landscape, the falling rain, the double rainbow, and the lightning overhead.

These are the moments I love most. You can plan the location and watch the weather, but every now and then nature decides to add a few things you definitely didn’t order.

You just hope you’re standing in the right place when it happens.

Architecture asks us to slow down and study structure, light, shape, and perspective. Street photography asks us to stay alert for the moment when people, place, and timing come together.

In this one-day workshop, we’ll explore both. We’ll begin photographing in the morning, then spend the afternoon selecting and editing images while discussing the choices that carry an idea through to the finished photograph.

New York has a way of turning motion, light, architecture, and memory into the same experience.

I made this image from the Tudor City Bridge shortly after sunset, layering long exposures to build the city's movement and glow into something closer to how it feels than how it literally looks.

Chris and I are headed back in a couple of days to see a few shows, and I’m looking forward to walking those streets again with a camera in hand.

Storm light, moving water, and the quiet strength of the Oregon Coast.

This image of the Coquille River Lighthouse was made during one of those moments when the weather becomes part of the composition. The clouds, surf, and structure all seemed to be pushing against each other, which is exactly the kind of energy I love photographing along the coast.

Shortly after Chris and I get back from New York, I’ll be heading to Oregon to lead a coastal photography workshop. I’m looking forward to helping photographers slow down, read the conditions, and build stronger images from scenes like this.
