It's funny how many questions come up before a portrait session that have absolutely nothing to do with a camera.

"What should I wear?"

"Where should we do this?"

"What do I do with my hands?"

And every now and then, someone points to a chin, an arm, or something else and asks, "Can you do anything about this?"

Of course we'll talk about all of it.

Those conversations are part of planning a portrait session, and I'd much rather know what's on your mind before we ever pick up the camera. We'll talk about clothing, location, how the photographs will be used, and even the things about yourself you'd rather not emphasize.

Somewhere along the way, you go from worrying about how the photographs will turn out to actually enjoying making them.

You don't have to arrive knowing what to do.

I'll help you with the rest.

An Entry from the Photographer's Notebook

There's an interesting thing that happens when you teach something you've been doing for years.

Someone asks, "Why did you put the light there?"

And suddenly, "Because that's where it belongs" isn't a particularly useful answer.

On Saturday, I spent the day with a small group of photographers exploring how to shape and control light. We moved lights, changed modifiers, experimented, and probably moved a few things right back to where they started.

But one of my favorite parts of the day was simply having the opportunity to give something back. I've benefited from a lot of photographers who were willing to share what they knew over the years. Teaching gives me an opportunity to do the same for someone else.

Our model gave us her time so everyone could learn and left with new images for her portfolio. Hopefully, everyone else left seeing light a little differently, with some new ideas to try on their own.

And teaching has a funny way of making the teacher look at things differently, too. When you have to explain why you make a choice instead of simply making it, you start noticing some of your own habits again.

Not a bad way to spend a Saturday.

One of my favorite parts of this job isn't the camera.

It's the conversations.

Some happen with families planning portraits.

Some happen with business owners updating a headshot.

Some happen over coffee after a networking meeting where nobody planned to talk about photography at all.

Every person has a story worth telling.

Mine just happens to begin with a camera and a conversation.

One of my favorite conversations usually starts with a simple question.

"When your session is over, where do you hope these photographs will end up?"

Nobody has ever answered, "On my phone."

Instead, they start talking about the wall above the fireplace, the hallway, or the family room.

I always smile a little.

By then, we're no longer talking about taking pictures.

We're talking about home.

Every family has someone who laughs and says, "Just use Photoshop."

I always smile a little because it's almost never what they really mean.

Most people don't want to look different. They just want to recognize themselves in a photograph and feel good sharing it with the people they love.

That's always been my goal.

Thankfully, it's a lot easier to get there than people think.

There are a few things I hear during almost every portrait session.

"I hate having my picture taken."

"I never know what to do with my hands."

And my personal favorite...

"I'll be the difficult one today."

The funny thing is, the person who says that almost never is.

I don't usually try to convince them otherwise. We just start talking.

By the end of the session, they're usually too busy talking, laughing, or telling me about their grandkids to remember they were ever worried about the camera.

That's my favorite part of the session.

Watching someone else create great light is helpful.

Creating it yourself is unforgettable.

That's why I'm keeping my upcoming PPA workshop, The Magic of Modifiers, limited to just six photographers.

We'll certainly talk about the why behind different modifiers, but most of the day is spent with cameras in your hands.

You'll work with a live model while we explore umbrellas, softboxes, strip boxes, grids, snoots, barn doors, gels, and more. We'll build lighting setups from a single light all the way to four-light arrangements, mix strobes with existing light, and even create convincing window light where no window exists.

You'll see each setup demonstrated.

Then you'll photograph it yourself.

By the end of the day, you won't just leave with notes. You'll leave with images, practical experience, and a much better understanding of how different modifiers shape light. The goal isn't to leave wanting another modifier. It's to leave seeing light differently.

An Entry from the Photographer's Notebook

Every August, my social media fills up with first-day-of-school photographs.

I love that tradition.

It's one of the few times each year that families stop, even for just a minute, to notice how much has changed.

Maybe that's one of the reasons I enjoy portrait photography so much. We don't always notice life changing while we're living it. It usually takes looking back at an older photograph to realize just how much life has quietly moved forward.

That's why I don't think a family's story is told by a single photograph.

It's told by all of them.

One of my favorite moments doesn't happen when I press the shutter. It happens later, when a client tells me which photograph became their favorite.

They're usually surprised by their own answer.

Before the session, people often imagine they'll choose the perfectly posed portrait where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling. Those portraits are important, and we always make time for them. Besides, one of them is probably going to end up on your Christmas card.

But more often than not, the image they come back to is the one that wasn't part of the plan. It might be the smile that wasn't rehearsed, the way a family naturally settles in together, or simply the photograph that feels the most like them.

After all these years, I've stopped trying to predict anyone's favorite photograph. The one that quietly slips by during the session often becomes the one that's framed on the wall.

Maybe that's because it doesn't just remind us what everyone looked like.

It reminds us what it felt like to be together.

Someone asked me recently what I actually do for a living.

I thought about saying, "I shoot people and cut off their heads."

Instead, I said, "Mostly, I convince perfectly normal people that they don't look nearly as awkward as they think they do."

That's a surprisingly large part of the job.

Almost every session starts the same way.

"I have no idea what to wear." "I don't know how to pose." "I'm going to make this difficult for you."

I usually laugh because I've heard some version of all of those before... usually before I've even taken the lens cap off.

Then we talk.

Not about photography, at least not much.

We talk about kids, work, travel ideas, how everyone managed to get the same day off, and occasionally whose idea it was to wear matching shades of blue.

Somewhere in the middle of that conversation, people stop thinking about the camera.

That's when I finally get to do the photography part.

Funny how that works.
