The history of the Imperial Gym—most prominently known as the Imperial Health Spa—in Downey, California, is a nostalgic tale of 1970s fitness culture.
Who remembers going to do their workouts when Imperial Gym was still at its prime as a hip place to put in your steps and to build some muscle pumping that iron?
The site is located at the highly visible intersection of Imperial Highway and Bellflower Boulevard.
The facility opened around 1973 as part of the growing "health spa" and fitness trend of the era. Known for its retro vibe and iconic, stylized "SPA" typography on the side of the building, it featured a gym, localized treatment rooms, and a large swimming pool.
Many of us were transferred from the Nautilus Gym that closed down at Stonewood Mall. The Nautilus Gym allowed for memberships to continue at the Imperial Gym. What a switch that was. And now the Imperial Gym is currently in the process of being demolished to make way for another
