The history of the Imperial Gym—most prominently known as the Imperial Health Spa—in Downey, California, is a nostalgic tale of 1970s fitness culture.

Who remembers going to do their workouts when Imperial Gym was still at its prime as a hip place to put in your steps and to build some muscle pumping that iron?

The site is located at the highly visible intersection of Imperial Highway and Bellflower Boulevard.

The facility opened around 1973 as part of the growing "health spa" and fitness trend of the era. Known for its retro vibe and iconic, stylized "SPA" typography on the side of the building, it featured a gym, localized treatment rooms, and a large swimming pool.

Many of us were transferred from the Nautilus Gym that closed down at Stonewood Mall. The Nautilus Gym allowed for memberships to continue at the Imperial Gym. What a switch that was. And now the Imperial Gym is currently in the process of being demolished to make way for another

Established in 1903 to support Downey’s pioneer agricultural economy, which featured the Tweedy and Ball Sunkist packing plant, citrus groves, and thriving mercantile shops along the Downtown Downey. The Downey Chamber of Commerce has supported local businesses, connected community leaders, and supported the growth of Downey’s business community.

In the 1950s, the Chamber notably marketed Downey as "The Ideal Community" to attract suburban tract homes and retail centers.

The mission statement currently is “We amplify Downey’s entrepreneurial spirit by connecting businesses, championing growth, and celebrating the community that makes local commerce thrive.”

The Downey Museum of Art (DMOA) was founded in 1957 by a group of residents called the Downey Art Association. Developer Willard Woodrow donated the facility to the city for the museum. His wife, Alice, was the museum’s founding director.
The museum was forced to shut down in 2009, and its 400-piece permanent art collection was placed into storage.
Today, the original mid-century modern building still stands near the entrance of Furman Park but, has been entirely repurposed. In 2017, the City of Downey partnered with the YMCA to open the YMCA Arts and Enrichment Center.

The Tahitian Village was a famous Polynesian-themed motor hotel and tiki lounge located at Lakewood Boulevard and Rosecrans Avenue in Downey, California.

Opened in 1961, the 183-room resort hosted Apollo space program astronauts and even rock bands like Van Halen. The property was razed in 2000, and the site is now a Food 4 Less grocery store.

The Los Angeles home of former California Governor John Gately Downey and his first wife, María de Jesús Jacinta Guirado, was a historic landmark located at 345 S. Main Street in downtown Los Angeles.Following their marriage in 1852, Downey constructed what is recognized as the city’s first two-story brick mansion, complete with a private ballroom. The couple returned to reside in this Los Angeles estate after his gubernatorial term ended in 1862.

John Gately Downey built this mansion for his bride. The brick mansion was highly advanced for 1850’s Los Angeles architecture.

While the couple lived primarily in downtown Los Angeles, Downey acquired the nearby 17,600-acre Rancho Santa Gertrudes through a foreclosed mortgage. He subdivided this land in 1873 to found the city of Downey, California.

Like most mid-19th-century residential structures on Main Street, the original brick estate was eventually demolished as downtown Los Angeles transitioned into a dense commercial and financial district.
