The Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of the best aquariums in the world. Opened in 1984 on the site of a former sardine cannery, it was the first to successfully exhibit a living kelp forest — a model that has inspired aquariums worldwide.

Today, it’s home to more than 35,000 creatures representing over 550 species, from playful sea otters to massive open-ocean fish. The aquarium is also a leader in marine research and conservation, helping protect ecosystems from Monterey Bay to oceans across the globe.

One of the most captivating exhibits, the jellyfish and sardines. I could have spent hours just watching them pulse and drift, glowing like living art.

The drive to Big Sur along the Pacific Coast Highway is one of the best road in the US — cliffs rising above the Pacific, sweeping curves, and the iconic Bixby Creek Bridge stretching across the canyon.

We ended at Pfeiffer Beach, famous for its rugged coastline and unique purple sand, created by minerals washing down from the surrounding hills. Watching the waves roll in here feels like the perfect payoff to the journey.

This winter, I planted daffodils as part of The Daffodil Project in honor of my grandmother, Penny Bowman. She survived the Holocaust along with her three siblings, but 44 of her family members were lost. This project is a tribute to her resilience and the countless lives that were taken.

You can find her story and her wedding dress at the The Breman Museum, Atlanta, GA. The Breman Museum

The Daffodil Project is a global initiative aiming to plant 1.5 million daffodils worldwide in memory of the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust. The bright yellow flowers symbolize hope, resilience, and renewal, ensuring that future generations remember and reflect on this history.
