“Everyone says Colorado w**d is so much better than Arizona’s…but I’m getting nothing.”

That’s not how I expected my day to begin.

A few hours before meeting Sarah and Spenser for their Telluride elopement, DKS and I hopped on the gondola.

We’d noticed her earlier in the plaza.

Perfectly put together. Tiny fluffy dog in her lap. Looking every bit the person you expect to see in Telluride.

She sat across from us and, without so much as a hello, delivered that line with complete sincerity.

Without missing a beat, I replied,

“Maybe it’s the elevation…you’re too high to get high.”

She burst out laughing.

DKS gave me the look.

You know the one.

The I cannot take you anywhere look.

A few hours later, I was standing at the base of Bridal Veil Falls with Sarah and Spenser as they promised forever to one another.

That’s one of the things I love most about being a photographer.

I get invited into some of the most meaningful moments in people’s lives.

But along the way, I also collect stories.

The gondola lady.

The little boy who farts for fun during family photos.

The groom who can’t stop smiling.

The bride wiping away happy tears.

Every shoot has a story.

Sometimes it’s emotional.

Sometimes it’s hilarious.

Sometimes it’s both.

But, I’m still wishing I’d asked the gondola lady if I could take her picture. I have a feeling that portrait would’ve been every bit as memorable as the conversation.

Warning: huge photo share…an image of this insanely beautiful couple popped in my head this morning and thought I’d share it with you all, then when I went into their gallery to retrieve it, all the feels rushed back and I kept downloading!

Adrianna & Scott had the most perfect early spring wedding near Durango. We rolled the dice on the weather and were prepared for pretty much anything-but-we had the most gorgeous afternoon!
First look at bridge over a creek, a stroll down the path, vows that were written on postcards (perfect!) and a first dance at sunset.
No wonder I couldn’t stop downloading!!

She told me she wanted extravagant.

And this isn’t it.

There are no sweeping gowns.
No elaborate set.
No flowers spilling from everywhere.

Instead, we walked into the aspens.

She raised her arms.
She leaned into a tree.
She stopped performing for my camera.

And I got closer.

What I saw was strong. Sensuous. A little wild.

A woman completely inhabiting the body that is growing her child.

Maybe not extravagant.

But absolutely everything.

And honestly?

I wouldn’t change a damn thing.

They eloped in Telluride.

We rode the gondola to the top of a mountain.
We wandered through town.
They danced in the middle of the street.
And we chased a mountain road all the way to Bridal Veil Falls.

Somewhere along the way, I watched him forget about me.

He relaxed.
He laughed.
He picked up his wife.
He touched her face like there wasn’t a camera four feet away.

That’s the moment I’m always waiting for.

Yes, Telluride showed off. The mountains were ridiculous. Bridal Veil Falls was stunning. The sun was high, hot and absolutely unapologetic.

But this was never really about the scenery.

It was about slowing down just enough to see them.

The laughter.
The heat.
The way they reached for each other.

Two people who came to the mountains to get married.

And let me come along for the ride.

Damn, what a ride it was.

One of my favorite parts of a wedding day isn’t the ceremony.

It’s the quiet moments before.

The laughter when no one else is around.

The deep breath before the vows.

The way they read words they’ve written a dozen times, then somehow get emotional anyway.

The stolen kisses.

The practical moments—fixing a cuff, straightening a dress, making sure the rings are where they’re supposed to be.

It’s where the nerves settle.
Where excitement replaces planning.
Where the day stops being about timelines and starts becoming their wedding.

By the time everyone is watching, so much of what matters has already happened.

Those private moments are often the ones they’ll remember most.

Cami and I chatted for a couple of months before hers and Ruben’s elopement in Durango.
I loved her vision of simplicity, and we chatted about why every couple deserves “more than a couple of pictures”. And Ruben, oh my goodness, had such a visual aesthetic! He knew how to hold Cami, telling her, don’t be afraid to arch your back when I pick you up, I’ve got you. Then, when he said, I know what I want! Then had my photographers heart when he said he wanted an American Gothic inspired portrait.
He even said, that was way more fun than I thought it would be.

There are photographs that become more valuable with time.

Not because they’re technically perfect.
Not because they win awards.
Not because they get thousands of likes.

They become priceless because they remind us how it felt.

Many people don’t know this, but I didn’t become a photographer because I wanted to make beautiful pictures.

I became a photographer after losing part of my vision to retinal vasculitis. At the time, I didn’t know what the future would hold or how much more vision I might lose.

So I came up with a plan.

I began filling a digital picture frame with photographs of my family, my friends, the mountains I love, and the ordinary moments that make up a life.

I imagined a future where, if I could no longer see the images, someone I loved could sit beside me and describe what was on the screen.

“This is Bradley laughing on Engineer Mountain.”

“This is Kenny jumping in the river.”

“This is Baxter running through the grass.”

And I hoped that even if my eyes couldn’t see them anymore, my mind’s eye—and my heart—would carry me back to that moment.

Somewhere along the way, my reason for photographing changed.

I realized I wasn’t trying to preserve what things looked like.

I was trying to preserve what they felt like.

This photograph reminds me why.

Grady ran past everyone and straight to his grandmother. As the rest of the family laughed, someone smiled and said, “It’s always MeMe.”

One simple sentence.

A lifetime of love.

Years from now, they may not remember where they were standing or what the weather was like that day.

But they’ll remember that Grady always ran to MeMe.

Photography can’t stop time.

But every once in a while, it lets us feel it again.

Every time I press the shutter, I’m hoping that someday, for someone, a photograph will become a doorway back to love.

And if, years from now, someone describes one of my photographs to a person who can no longer see it—and that description brings the memory rushing back—then the photograph has done exactly what I hoped it would.
