It’s White Pass Wednesday…

Steaming through the ghost town of Bennett at the southern edge of the inland fijord of the same name, we find White Pass and Yukon 73 heading south to Alaska.

During the Rush of 1898, many prospective miners arrived here and settled for the winter. During their time here, they would construct an armada of rafts and boats to float their way towards the Yukon mining fields far off.

Many buildings were once here dotting the scene, including a brothel ran by a man whose offspring would include an american president. Today, only the church, railroad buildings, and a few remnants make the scene. Many building in the town were simply rolled to the water and floated down into the Yukon.

The arrival of the railroad would hasten the demise of the town as there was no need to build the boats for the intrepid miners.

For years, this was the dividing line on the White Pass Route, American crews would not only return to their point of origin, but many times take their engines with them, hence, the wye and balloon loop that make up most of the trackage here. While this was occurring, passengers would head inside to eat lunch in the hall at the remote locale... One that is still only accessible by train and foot (and boat).

Charging up the grade and coming home from the Grand Canyon, we find Grand Canyon Railway 4960 crossing the expansive sky high ponderosa forests that Arizona is famous for. Brought back in 1996, the GCR 4960 originally made its name pulling school children in Chicago for the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railway in the 1950's and 60's. Today, she pulls trains on select days with assistance from ex -Amtrak diesels as the massive grades on this line are too steep for 4960 to handle alone.

As August winds down, let's finish off the celebration of Colorado's 150th anniversary, we return to the 's 168 as it pulls its way up 'State Line' Hill on the Colorado/New Mexico Border. The locomotive which was in Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services / City of Colorado Springs Antlers Park for decades now plies the rails that it was built for, the old Denver and Rio Grande rails that tied the state together.

For the 150 Anniversary of Colorado becoming a full fledged state, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad ran special trains headlined by the City of Colorado Springs’ historic locomotive 168. Here we catch 168 pounding up grade out of the San Luis Valley.

The Jack Rabbit Trading Post lost half of their iconic sign a couple of days ago in a blast from a monsoon thunderstorm. Here’s the half of the sign that survived a while back as Amtrak’s blasts eastward into the rising sun at 90 mph a few years ago.

Hopefully they’ll have it up and restored soon.

A sight not seen for over 75 years as Knott's Berry Farm 's Ghost Town and Calico Railroad's 340 is seen crossing the Rio de Las Animas on today's & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad . The skilled mechanical staff of the Durango and Silverton have taken this treasured artifact of Knott's and restored it to like new condition and KBF has allowed the railroad to do public excursions with it.

We find the GT&C heading towards the wye at Cascade in early June of 2026 on a photographer's special.

The summer heat got you down? Watch this cool (ha!) video where we return to the freezing temperatures of Feburary 2026 with the only major snow to hit the region this winter. We catch Rio Grande Southern 20 as it comes down from the Colorado Railroad Museum to run on (almost) home rails for the first time in 75 years.

It's June 2026 and we find Knott's Berry Farm's "Ghost Town and Calico Railroad" No.340, a C-19 'Consolidation' built by Baldwin in 1881 for the Denver and Rio Grande, the same line she sits on here in Rockwood Colorado on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. This was the final run of the 340 on home rails before being loaded up to return to Knott's the next day.

The Durango Crew has finished a complete rebuild of the 340 which was its most extensive since leaving Baldwin in the 19th Century.

Here we see crews of the Durango and Silverton AND The Ghost Town and Calico posing for photographers after a day on the line where the synergy between the two famed narrow gauge railroads was on display.
