This week, as it continues to alternate between rain, slush, and snow, I am spending time planning out a pollinator garden. I don’t mind the precipitation because 🎶 April showers bring May flowers 🎶 (anyone else sing this song to themsev every time it rains in the spring?).

Working in a learning garden was how I first started noticing how much I loved photographing pollinators. This year, I’m focusing on what type of pollinators we want to attract and designing the space to include food sources and habitats specifically focused on each type of pollinator.

What’s your favorite pollinator? What should we plant to attract the creatures you like to see in a garden?

One of my favorite parts of having my art on walls of galleries is when my sons see my art exhibited.

Avery and Jude are often next to me when I take the photos, or are peering over my shoulder during the editing process, or assiting me when I frame the photo and attach the gallery wire. As I learn the art of photography, so do they.

This piece is special because Avery had a hand in making it, unbeknownst to him at the time. Titled “Anatomy of Moisture”, this photograph is the view of our backyard through our bathroom window that is saturated in condensation after Avery took a long, hot shower without turning on the exhaust fan. When I stepped into the bathroom, frustrated he forgot this critical step in moistire management, I was fascinated by the way the condensed water droplets clung to the window. I aped a photo and then used Adobe Lightroom to adjust the contrast and hue, deepening the colors.

So Avery, thank you for your quirkiness and love of scalding showers that test the limit of our water heater. We make great art together.

“Anatomy of Moisture” is currently on display through April 9 at the Colonel Eugene Meyers Gallery, Hughes Fine Art building, at the University of North Dakota. Go check it out, along with the other fine works of other UND students.

Spring is almost here. I can't wait to plant parsley and dill to encourage swallowtail butterflies to visit my garden. Swallowtail caterpillars are my favorite!
