I’m so happy to have been a part of the monthly Edmonds Art Walk. Thank you Jen from .crow for hosting me. I had such a blast talking with art walkers and sharing my process and artistic interests. I was demonstrating my carving in store by working on a pair of salad serving spoons. Thank you again to everyone involved and family for coming out to support me.

New rough cut maple bowl in progress! We had a huge storm a month or so ago and a big leaf maple came down among some other evergreens. Now I have way too much wood to know what to do with. See last photos in post.

A recently completed piece from cherry wood. This is a long symmetrical flat top trough style bowl. I intentionally made the interior more shallow than my previous work. It was actually rather difficult at first not to go as deep as I was used to. This left room on the bottom of the blank so I could bottom carve two feet that the bowl stands on - another first for my carving. I was extremely happy with the final result. Initially the heartwood and sapwood were more contrasting in their tones, but as the wood dried it evened out. Needless to say this piece has some amazing grain quality to it. Finished with raw food grade linseed oil.

December 28, 2022 - When I started out learning to carve I had only my slojd knife and a hunk of wood. Pretty quickly I realized that if I was going to learn to carve bowls I needed a bench to secure my work.

Finishing the final inside and outside rough cuts of my recent flat top rectangle bowl. I’ve read that the tradition is to call it a dough bowl due to its size and level rim. Next it’s on to the drying phase….

I recently built this “bench mule”or “bowl mate”. I had acquired the log last year from a felled tree that I got from a tree pruner I know. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it until it dawned on me to build a more stable bench for my finish work on my bowls. I bought a vintage 2 inch hand auger for the mortises and used a drawknife for the leg tenons. The legs are from vine maple, which is incredibly hard wood. I hand augered the 3/4 inch dog holes as well. I used a chainsaw to cut the 24 inch table top out of the log, but it did such a sloppy job that I spent a great deal of time leveling it out and cleaning it up with an axe and hand plane. The whole bench weighed more than I could almost lift before I cut the table out. It still has a mighty heft, due to the fact the maple log is mostly wet. I’m very excited to wedge in some bowls and kuksa and put this to the test. Right now the table sits at 39 inches, which may be a bit tall. I’ll use it and perhaps cut it down if need be. Thanks to and and for the majority of the inspiration, content and direction.
