Hiking Fuego Volcano was, without a doubt, one of the most physically and mentally challenging things I’ve ever done.
This wasn’t just a hike you casually show up for. It took weeks of preparation — training, planning, dialing in gear, and mentally preparing for the elevation gain (about 5,000+ feet). As someone living with POTS, I went into it with some anxiousness. Steep climbs, high altitude, and long hours on my feet aren’t small things when your body doesn’t always cooperate.
And after all of that preparation, it still came down to something completely out of my control — the weather. Fuego is notorious for hiding behind clouds, storms, or thick fog. Some people make the climb and never actually see it erupt clearly.
I watched a fiery sunset wrap around the volcano as it erupted in the distance as I sat next to my wife. The next morning, we woke up to fog rolling dramatically through the landscape. It felt other-worldly — raw, powerful, and humbling all at once.
Fuego will always hold a piece of me.
