Here is another shot from “Loose Ends” that I’m particularly proud of.
For this one, we really leaned into the deeper depth of field characteristic of films from the era that inspired the look of the project, intentionally shooting at higher T-stops even in low light. We also prioritized fluid blocking within the frame, allowing the camera movement to feel motivated by the actors rather than movement for movement’s sake.
Huge credit to my G&E team, Adam Goad and Sid, for pulling off this look in the middle of the afternoon. They essentially built a lighting tent around a 7ft window to kill the daylight, then created a controlled single-source push through the blinds. Not an easy thing to pull off, and they absolutely nailed it. They never cease to amaze me 💡🎥
One other thing I wanted to leave in: you can see a slight jitter during the pan left. It wasn’t intentional, and warp stabilization can clean it up almost completely, but I actually prefer showing the raw movement here.
So many films from the era we were referencing contain tiny imperfections born from the limitations and physicality of filmmaking at the time. The shot still works. The movement still works. And there’s something I love about those little imperfections being allowed to exist. They’re evidence that there was a real person behind the camera, physically operating it in that moment.
Not everything needs to be perfectly sterile to be effective.
