Back in 2020 while the Monterey bay was experiencing a very rare bioluminescent bloom, this extremely rare dry lightning storm came up from the south, which is the opposite direction most storms travel around here. These two things are not only rare, but together they were quite beautiful and destructive. These lightning strikes continued heading north and made landfall around Santa Cruz. The result was the CZU Complex fires. The worst fires to hit Santa Cruz County as far back as anyone remembers.
I spent over 5 hours walking around the beach and shooting these incredible scenes I was seeing. Lightning illuminating the sky and making the clouds glow purple and then in-between the strikes there were blue bioluminescent waves brightly crashing along the shore. One of my composite images of this is featured in a book and a project called "The Bay of Life". It was one of several images taken by locals which are published alongside the founder of the project, Frans Lanting's, incredible gallery of images taken around Monterey bay.
Many of the images I took that night were taken trying to capture the nearly impossible shots you see here. To be able to see both the blue waves and the lightning strikes in the same frame is more than just a challenge. Enjoy this time-lapse made from 120 pictures taken at 5 seconds long for each exposure. The blue waves do not show up very well in less time that that since thye are so dim. The F-stop was set to 8 so I could somehow capture lightning without completely overexposing the shot. With a generous dose of AI based noise reduction (Adobe Denoise AI) I as able to make this little video from those 120 sequential long exposures.
Frans Lanting and Chris Eckstrom will present "The Bay of Life", their Monterey Bay Conservation project this Tuesday evening in Carmel at the Sunset Cultural Center. Maybe we will see you there.
