We invited some friends along for a backpacking adventure on North Manitou Island. I had never been before but the girls seemed to have a lot of faith in me. Ha! I was proud of everyone. It was a challenging adventure, especially since for most of the group, it was their first backpacking experience. Everyone kept their spirits high as we hiked completely across the island with full packs in high heat and humidity. Survived thunderstorms with gusty winds and torrential rains that flooded the site and caused landslides up and down the cost. The fog lifted in the afternoon and we were lucky enough to be able to dry everything instead of packing out wet stuff. We got an awesome beach day in and beautiful weather for our hike out the following day. Smiles still on faces at the end. Mom's got a much deserved cocktail while the young ladies got a ton of sugar and junk food on the boat ride back.

This here will always bring me back. So much of my childhood was spent on the shores of Lake Michigan not far from here. A toxic concoction of nostalgia and natural beauty. I can't drink in enough of it in the little time we share. It as if the Universe is saying, "You know and I know, you will always come back for more"

This guy has officially explored 20 states and traveled international twice. Sometimes just watching from the window as the world goes by and other times running wild and free in unfamiliar terrain. He started in a daycare and later raised along side dogs. In his teenager years he join our family and became Rhianna's bestfriend. I wasn't too excited for a cat but he soon won me over. To be fair, he thinks he is a dog. He gained street smarts scrapping in the city of Hastings, and learned country survival skills while acting as the neighborhood tramp on a country lane in Rockford. Little did he know he was gaining skills along the way for his "golden" years to become an adventure cat exploring North America. They say it's about the company you keep, but we know it's his laid back, easy going personality that has gotten him this far. Not many cats get to wander around with no supervision. We can trust him and he can trust us. I actually have him trained in find single men in other campsites. JK but he does open plenty of conversations especially when he walks around like a dog on a leash. He is showing his age and his body is a remnant of his younger, scrappier days, but this wise kat has learned like I have...travel does a body good.

Seems like all these old hotel/hospitals are haunted. This one claims to be the most haunted. We didn’t pay the $50 for ghost tour and took our time getting to the sky bar to make a tour of our own. I was called to go down one particular hallway. It did take me past the most haunted room that is booked out three years in advance. We got more bad vibes from the penthouse then anywhere else. A masonry died building the place, several died from falling or being pushed but the real fame for the place is when Norman Baker turn it into a hospital. Never stepped foot in a medical school but he found the cure for cancer, corn silk, watermelon seeds, clover, water and carbolic acid. He would tell people that he could cure them or their money back. Then be very selective with patients that had no close family members. That way he didn't have to pay the money back when they died.

We stumbled upon this little magically town a few years ago and it has always called Rhianna back. It is magically. Natives saw this land as neutral grounds and tribes from far corners of the continent came for it's healing waters. A hunter followed an injuried bear he shot (the bear knew) and "discovered" the spot the "Injuns" had been hiding from early settlers. Well it didn't take long to build a city especially after the railroad spur was put in. Eureka had it's prime as you can tell by the architecture in the Victorian Era. People came from all over to be cured from drinking or bathing in the magically waters. The turn of the century brought "modern medicine" and a couple of wars distracted Americans and the city hidden the mountains with magically water was soon forgotten. The city has numerous mentions in Riley Believe it or Not. Most of the roads were built on Indian and animal trails. The mountain didn't allow for straight roads and many buildings are built into the mountain side. When you walk in from the street you are probably on the fourth or third floor. It's home to the only church in the world that you enter through the bell tower. So much to explore.

I don't think flexseal or tape is going to fix that leak. Gasoline is kind of funny on how it's flammable or explosive. Even more interesting is the propane refrigerator who's flame kicks on and off that is located directly above this. Calling around rv repair shops and it would be 6 to 8 weeks before anyone will look at it. Looks like we are staying in the area for a bit. At least long enough to network and find a local mechanic. I'm excited to see what comes from this little detour.

Landscape is changing and we are loving the green. We stopped at a state park to ride out some storms. We were able to get some hikes in between passing showers. The desert was nice for the winter and I learned a lot of new flora and animals but there is something comforting about my native lands. Identifying bird songs and knowing who is tagging along from tree to tree without needing to see them while spying signs of spring on the floor. Just missed the dogwoods but that is what makes this lifestyle so incredible. I'll just head a little further north or higher elevation to catch them. I mean, I've hopped the equator to catch Autumn why not chase Spring through the States.

Not going lie, feels good to be getting closer to the Midwest area. We are noticing it most in Customer Service and it's feeling more like home. 😂

Villa Philbrook was a child of the 20's. Born when Tulsa smelled of oil and resounded with money. Oilman Waite Phillips hired Kansas architect, Edward Buehler Delk to build the 72 room manison for his 16 and 10 yr old children to have a place to entertain their friends. After 10 years when the children were grown and gone Waite surprised Tulans with the manison and surrounding 23 acres as an art center. Talk about goals.
I'll post pictures of the collection in our story. It also featured an open exhibition on racial violence in Tulsa. Have you ever heard of Black Wall Street or Tulsa's Greenwood District? Well, it's gone now. Over time, fear and jealousy swelled within the white community so they burned it to the ground. You see in this neighborhood where "black dollars" were segregated an economic advantage was seized. A talented cadre of African American businessperson and entrepreneurs piled their trades. Creating a nationally renowned entrepreneur center covering 35 Sq blocks. A chance encounter between two teenagers lit the fuse that set Greenwood on fire. Resentment over the black economic success, racially hostile climate and mob rule mentality destroyed it within 24 hours. People, property, hopes and dreams vanished as fires raged. Mobs of weapon wielding white men, some deputies by local law enforcement, prevented firefighters from extinguishing fires. Property damage in the millions, hundreds died and even more injured.

You live an extraordinary life, I'm told this a lot. Today's exploration brought into perspective just how extraordinary of a life I've created. I'll listed random quotes of the day:
I forgot the camera. Why do you need a camera when you have hundreds of pictures from Africa?
Mmm, ostrich does taste good. I wonder what other tasty animals we'll see.
It's just a zebra.
This is the closest I've been to a grizzly.
These are very small giraffes.
The flamingos in South America were more pink than the flamingos in Africa.
I missed the little penguins in Chile and went for the King Penguins.
Remember that elephant on the side of the road that had diabetes because people feed it too much fruit.
Following that orangutan in the tree tops was one of the greatest and probably rarest experiences of my life.
Thes habitats way to small for them. Poor things.
If people experienced monkeys in the wild they would know what little ass holes they really are.
Bitch, what you smiling at?
The okc zoo had a profound impact on me when I was a teenager. Fresh, new and HUGE compared to Grand Rapids Zoo. I'll never forget watching a group of people making fun of a gorilla. Him looking at them. Huffing, turning his back to them and crossing his arms to show them his disgust in their insults. It was that moment I realized animals have a conscious. Revisting it today myself and the exhibits reflect the 25 years that have passed. However, I found myself observing the humans more than the animals. Their diets fascinated me. How could they eat this kind of food all of the time? We tried some of the local delicatessens and felt like crap the rest of the day. Low energy and I believe the high salt content contributed to our dehydration. Unique behaviors, and I wanted to learn more of their history to understand how their core values developed. Their behaviors become actions and habits that lead to visible consequences. Yes, while others ran from exhibit to exhibit to witness exotic animals that now have little impact on me. I turned to trying to understand what must happen to a man to make him upset when he sees someone smile.
