Since I was in middle school, I have been running around with a camera in my hand. What has fueled this passion for photography has been my obsession with trains. Growing up in the port community of San Pedro, Calif, I was exposed to trains and ships carrying cargo back and forth to Asia. With influence from grandfather's passion for model trains, and my father taking me to watch trains before I w

as in grade school, I gained a love for trains that I never out grew. Currently as an undergrad student at Northern Arizona University, I am fortunate to be near one of America's busiest rail lines; the BNSF Southern Transcon. The section of mainline action I've focused on is the BNSF Seligman Subdivision. The Seligman Subdivision runs from Needles, Calif. The line is an important route to connect UPS traffic from Chicago, IL to the west coast ports of California. Along this line, over seventy train tackle in a headed to headed battle with gravity as they travel over the Arizona Divide; an elevation of 7,335 feet above sea level. From Needles, Calif (550 feet above sea level), these heavy freight trains work as hard as they can to concur over the divide.

The last rays of sunlight have produced vibrant colors in the sky over the eastern Mojave Desert. As the light fades away, the headlights of the BNSF #8028 illuminate the steel rails near Cadiz, CA as it, and three other motors, pull a heavy intermodal train from the Port of Long Beach.

The morning sun hits the nose of the BNSF 7540 as it emerges out of Nelson Tunnel. Nelson Tunnel is the only double track tunnel built by the Santa Fe. With the triple track project of Cajon Pass, resulting in the daylighting of two tunnels, Nelson became the only tunnel on BNSF's Southern Transcon.

UP 4014, the only 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" steam locomotive in operation, pulls a 25 car long passenger special over the 3,800 ft high summit of Cajon Pass on Oct. 12, 2019. Fans from all over came out in drones in order witness this rare machine make a historic trip across Southern California's high desert. The passenger special was held for the Rail Giants Museum, where UP 4014 was before restoration, and was a weekend trip from West Colton to Barstow, and back to West Colton the following day. All ticket proceeds went directly back to the museum.

The early morning rays of sunlight warm the cab of the BNSF 8278 as it descends down the eastern slope of the Arizona Divide between the control points of Darling. With a mile long string of empty well cars for storage, the two GE motors notch out of the famous Darling Sag with the San Francisco Mountains looming in the background under stormy conditions.

On a mid November day, the mercury is hovering around 25 degrees as the sun slowly rises over the tops of the Coconino pine trees. In the distance, the sound rumbling of heavy machinery begins to get louder, and louder. Soon, the sound becomes identifiable as General Electric made locomotives. Here, two of these 4,400 horsepower locomotives slowly move through the grade out of Flagstaff on this double stack train. Crawling at about 20 MPH, this train, bound for the On-dock Terminal of Southern California (Long Beach, Calif.), is carrying containers full of grain products to be exported to Asian markets.

On a rare occasion, the Grand Canyon Railway will run their Alcos locomotives on their trains to the Grand Canyon. Per the request of a photo charter happening on the line, the Alcos pulled the Canyon Limited instead of the F40 locomotives. Here, GCRY 6793 pulls out of Quivero after being "robbed" by the cowboys that board the the train to scare the passengers.
