My most favorite picture of my trip to Virginia. As I was traveling over a country backroad looking for the location of my ancestors land I came across this grist mill.

This one document lead my sister and I to a discovery of a life time.
My 5th Great Grandfather, Hickerson Cosby (Jacobs).

It started when we searched and found his marriage record in a book at a nearby Library. In comments, it said that the minister cites his surname as Cosby. My sister and I were so surprised by this. We have never heard this name before. Our last name is Jacobs, not Cosby!

This definitely got us very curious. Thus, this started our journey to Virginia. We need to find out why this minister would state this comment.

We went to the Albemarle County, Virginia Court house and searched marriages. Found his marriage in November 1799, but the book stated his name as Hickerson Jacobs.

So we rolled up our sleeves and dug into each individual original loose documents for clues. We hit pay dirt. We found his original marriage license, and most important the minister's document.
The very first name was Hickerson Cosby md Susannah Martin November 4, 1799.

This of course, led to more questions and a Y-DNA test of my father. We are COSBY.

My sister and I visited the Albemarle county, Virginia courthouse to do research on our ancestors from the late 1700’s. The documents are scarce during that time and finding answers is difficult. Our goal was to discover who our 5th great grandfather bought land from.
After searching several hours and getting very hungry, we found what we were looking for.😁

If anyone knows me they know that my two passions are genealogy and photography.
I have been doing genealogy for over 35 years. I have found some interesting ancestors and some challenging questions. The latest mystery is that my surname Jacobs was originally Cosby. Trying to figure out why my ancestor Hickerson Cosby Jacobs changed his name when in got married in 1799 has been difficult. But recently some of that Brick wall came falling down when we did my father's Y-Dna and he showed no Jacobs descent but Cosby. *Now to figure out who Hickerson's parent were.* Off to Virginia this year to do some digging in old Court House records.
This is a photograph I did in a photography course. Those are actual pictures of my ancestors.

My grandmother Bessie Eckler (she is the one on the far right in the white dress) was born in 1921. I would put this school picture around 1928. She was the daughter of Claude Eckler and Alice See. Her family owned a large farm outside of Sparta, Kentucky. The Eckler family has lived here for over 100 years. I grew up going to Sparta every weekend with my grandmother and father. My father returned to Sparta to live a few years ago, and I still visit this place several times a year.

I love coming across these pictures of Sparta and my grandmothers school picture. This town has not changed at all. There is a few less buildings, but a majority of them still stand from the early days.
