I was out in the Coden area on a recent morning photographing birds and decided to swing over to Bayou La Batre to see what was happening on the water. Off in the distance I spotted a shrimpboat easing its way back in, so I launched the drone and caught a few shots as it moved down the channel. Then I drove farther along the road and grabbed a few frames from the shoulder with my camera as it made its slow, steady return home.

Sometimes the only way to get the shots you’re chasing is to stay out until three in the morning, and this was one of those nights. I had originally planned to shoot the Milky Way over the weekend, but the forecast shut that idea down, so I stayed home. A little later, sitting in the quiet, my phone lit up with a lightning alert for Dauphin Island. I checked the radar and saw storms building and pushing inland, so I grabbed my gear and headed out to see what the night might offer.

Over the next two hours, as the storms rolled across the bay, I captured these images of lightning tearing through the darkness, shrimpboats reflected on the dark water. Eventually the downpours became too heavy to shoot through, and I had to pack up, soaked and tired, but with the kind of night shots you only get when you chase the storm into the early hours.

Outer Banks Horse Part 4

The last of the Outer Banks wild horse photos, I promise. After finally sorting through more than 2,000 shots from that day, I’m wrapping it up. The whole experience was something we won’t forget anytime soon. Watching those horses move through the dunes and then seeing them walk along the beach with the waves brushing at their hooves felt like a quiet kind of magic, the sort you carry with you long after the trip is over.

Over the last two weeks, a pair of Mississippi Kites have made themselves at home in the trees behind my house, using them as both hunting perches and evening roosts. It has been a real treat to finally observe these elegant raptors up close. Known for their graceful flight and incredible aerial agility, Mississippi Kites spend much of their time catching insects on the wing, often making effortless twists and turns as they patrol the sky. Watching them glide through the neighborhood each day has been a highlight, and having the opportunity to photograph them from my own backyard has made the experience even more special

Taking the Scenic Route

While exploring the Corolla Beach area and photographing the wild horses, we noticed a powered paraglider passing overhead several times. It was certainly a different way to travel the coastline, and judging by the smile on the pilot's face, it looked like he was having the time of his life. I couldn't resist taking a photo as he cruised above the beach. While it looked like a lot of fun, I think I'll stick to keeping my feet a little closer to the ground.

Recently, I visited the sunflower fields at Riverview Turf Farm and launched the drone to take advantage of the beautiful light across the landscape. The view from above revealed an endless sea of blooms stretching toward the horizon. Out of all the images I captured that day with my drone, this photograph stood out as my favorite, perfectly capturing the color, pattern, and warmth of a summer evening in the fields.

I love photographing Reddish Egrets when they’re hunting in the shallow flats. They’re some of the most animated birds I’ve ever watched, running through the water with that wild, almost playful energy. One of their signature moves is lifting their wings like umbrellas as they chase fish. That canopy of shade helps cut the glare on the surface, letting them see into the water more clearly, and it also startles prey just enough to give the egret an advantage. Between the wing‑flashing, the quick bursts of movement, and their dramatic posture, they’re endlessly fascinating to watch and even better to capture through the lens.

Roseate Spoonbills
Jeykll Island, GA

The morning we left Jekyll Island and started the drive back to Mobile, my wife spotted a small group of Roseate Spoonbills glowing pink in the marsh along the roadside. I turned the car around right away because I can never pass up a chance to photograph these birds. I pulled on my waterproof boots and waded in for a closer view, and it was worth every step. The photos became the perfect way to wrap up an already incredible road trip.
