Sitting here editing the pictures from a newborn session I got to go do the other day, trying not to let my heart completely melt out onto the floor. But those rolls….that peach fuzz!

I’ve been quiet these past two years….
Not going to lie, I have really been struggling to find the motivation to write the copy for posts, or frankly to focus on anything outside of my own kids and keeping our family’s main business open.

I wouldn’t call this “depression” …. but I really feel like this is a very normal human response to all of the polarization and craziness happening in the world.

These are crazy times, and lately it feels like everything is designed to rip people apart from each other….But Helping people is a giant part of my nature! I can’t allow what’s happening in the world to stifle that any longer.

I’ve really been missing being with other families too… I miss passionately educating expecting parents about lactation and birth and what to expect postpartum. I miss being a pillar of support in the birth space, and capturing those genuine moments that tell such meaningful stories for our future generations...

The journey of bringing another soul into this world, of transitioning into parenthood — it means a lot. I don’t need to get all corny about it. But I’d love to be there for you!

My website is down right now because I’m working on redesigning it. (Which will probably be a while lol.) But if you’re interested in birth or lifestyle family photography, send me a message 🙂 I’m now accepting bookings for Spring 2022.

This is a hard time for millions of folks around the world.
There’s no sugar coating it.

I have been bitterly silent, and quite honestly, I don’t have anything clever to say. It’s all been said already. Hasn’t it...?

This is one of those times in life where you just keep going. You do small, meaningful things that bring you and your loved ones a sense of peace. You try to be part of a solution, (Like wearing a muthaf****ing mask — but I regress...) and not the problem.

Nothing is permanent. We find patience, and with time things will evolve into something different. I find solace in that...

Anyways. Whoever reads this — I hope you’re doing ok. 🧡
And if you’re a midwife, nurse or healthcare worker — you rock and you effing know it. Thank you for everything you do!

Vernix. Also known as vernix caseosa or “birthday frosting ” — is the white cheesy substance that covers babies while they float in the womb. It carries amazing health benefits, and there are many reasons to consider leaving the vernix on the baby’s skin as long as possible.

Vernix is made up of 81% water, 9% lipids, and 10% proteins. It is produced by the baby’s sebaceous glands, a process thought to be triggered by an endocrine response, but still not fully understood by scientists. Studies have shown that baby’s lung maturity and pulmonary surfactants parallel with peak activity of the sebaceous glands — when they are at the height of vernix production in the second and third trimesters.

Vernix is a powerful barrier that prevents baby’s skin from absorbing too much moisture from amniotic fluid they swim in. It also acts like a lubricant for movement in the womb, and it eases friction during childbirth.

The color of vernix can alert midwives if there has been any intra-uterine problems and gestational age; as an example, golden yellow vernix is a sign of post maturity.

After the birth, Vernix becomes the world’s best lotion. Still acting as a moisture barrier, but this time it prevents their skin from losing moisture as they adjust to the dry outside world.

Vernix has antimicrobial and antifungal properties to help protect babies fragile immune systems both en-utero and after birth. Leaving vernix on the skin has been known to reduce skin conditions like cradle cap, and it also helps babies regulate their body temperature!

Babies are not born dirty (unless they are covered in meconium), and from boosted immunity and skin health, to body temperature regulation and hormonal benefits, there are plenty of reasons let your baby keep their vernix as long as possible.

Before your birth, you can let your midwife or doctor know that you wish to delay baby’s first bath, and request that nurses do not wipe off excess vernix.

Some moms choose to delay their baby’s first bath for the recommended minimum of 6 hours, up to even several weeks after birth.

I don’t leave the house much these days.... Homeschooling and running our other small business has absorbed pretty much all of my attention.

But I got a chance to get out of the house to do a socially distanced photo session for my sweet friend — The temperature dropped so fast 🥶 so it was literally the fastest photo shoot I’ve ever done. We rocked out a some awesome pictures, and all got out of there in like ten minutes flat. Regardless it was great to spend some time with this beautiful family.

Folks, I was born in Colorado — and I have never seen drought and wildfires like this in my life.

We are not alone. From the Derecho winds that obliterated the Midwest this summer, to the hurricanes, devastating storms, fires, droughts... our entire country and many others around the globe are feeling the effects of the climate changes we have collectively ignored for decades.

Now, we are in the THICK of a climate *crisis*.

Many of the people I know and hold dear to my heart are disheartened by this year’s choice of presidential candidates, and they say we are “screwed” no matter who wins. While I personally feel that may be true to some degree....we should vote for the candidate most likely to protect our planet, and our children’s future.

MOST IMPORTANTLY
I believe that regardless of who sits in the White House, that each and every one of us has the capacity to bring about REAL changes to our environment and our society.

Start learning about permaculture, Grow your own food, start a compost pile.... (or if you don’t want to, try to buy direct from local farmers)

Stop using so much plastic, plant trees, teach your kids to and treat this planet and the people and animals living on it with love and humility.

Not only will it make a difference in your families’ happiness and health, but it will have a really, tangible, impact on your local community and help us shift towards a more sustainable existence.

Many of my clients want to know if I will edit out stretch marks, cellulite and varicose veins. (And baby acne)

We are constantly bombarded with airbrushed and manufactured imagery that is specifically designed to make us pick ourselves apart in the mirror. So that we will go out and spend billions on mostly toxic products that claim to ”fix us”.

While I CAN, and often do, provide some fully retouched images if asked - I believe everyone deserves to see the beauty in who they genuinely are. Our bodies are incredible! Resilient, capable, self-healing, life carrying vessels. Beautiful in their own way...sacred.
And guess what? Time is inevitable, we all age. We can fight it as much as we want, yet still we are not immortal or immune to the gravity of living on this earth.

So instead of falling for the media’s claims that you aren’t good enough, isn’t it better to learn to see yourself as Botticelli would?

Isn’t it better so see your varicose veins as graceful ferns, dancing up your legs? 🌿

Isn’t it better to learn to admire the mermaid-like shine of your b***y stretchmarks?

There’s nothing quite like those first few days with baby. Getting lost in your baby’s soulful gaze is one of the most incredible things to experience. (It makes the Exhaustion, soreness, and the postpartum hormones all worth it)
