Sister Gradeless is off! She’s beginning an 18-month mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Southern California. She will be spending her time teaching others about Jesus Christ and His love for us. What an amazing journey she is starting!

Let me tell you a little secret--your house does NOT need to look like a designer magazine for an in-home newborn session.

It doesn't even need to be spotless. With a brand-new baby, the last thing you need to worry about is deep-cleaning or trying to hide the diaper bins and bottles everywhere. We only need a single good window and a cleared off couch, bed, or in the nursery. I will literally slide a laundry basket just out of the frame so all you have to do is sit back and enjoy life as it's happening. Capturing cute moments does NOT have to be stressful and does not have to be done with strict conditions in order to work.

Black and white, or color?

What's your opinion on black and white photos? When I offer black and white photos, I never use them in place of a color photo. If I don't have every photo in your gallery with a color and black and white option, you will most definitely have every photo in color and some with black and white as well.

To me, black and white photos add a lot of drama, and it completely changes the vibe of a photo! I like to be able to offer both options rather than making that decision for my clients, but I know a lot of photographers use their own artistic judgment when selecting which photos they want to deliver as color or black and white.

What's your take? Do you like black and white photos? Which option would you pick from these two if you HAD to choose?

Wedding Tip Wednesday: Why photo groupings matter

Your photographer (ahem, me) might ask for a list of must-have group photos ahead of time, and that's because we can't do it on the fly (we totally could, but that's not the point). There are two super legit reasons why I need this list ASAP.

First, I don't want to miss ANYTHING. This is a one-day event. Without a plan, we might end up with a bunch of similar pics and wonder if we've already taken that group shot...or not. And let's be real, you might forget to ask for a certian pic in the moment and kick yourself later for not getting it. A plan saves us from a ticket aboard the hot mess express.

Second, I want to make your day as easy as possible. I've done this a time or two ;) so I know how to make those family formals flow seamlessly. And to be honest, I don't want you having to try to remember any of it. I want you to live in every single moment of that day and enjoy it.

Not sure where to begin? No worries, friend! I've got direction, suggestions, and vibes to spare!

Emily's mission pictures are just wow.
The temple is my absolute favorite place on Earth, and getting to be there with Emily as she's preparing to serve an 18-month mission was truly something special.
We can only pick one to frame 🫣 which one is your favorite?

Wedding Tip Wednesday: First Look Photos or Wait For the Aisle?

There is no right or wrong answer here. This depends completely on you and the flow of your day.

For my own wedding, we had our first look before the ceremony, and I loved it. Our guests didn't have to wait for a long cocktail hour before the reception began because our ceremony went straight into the reception.

There is definitely something special about waiting until you walk down the aisle to see each other for the first time. That being said, I don't think the emotion in my wedding was diminished in the slightest because our first look was before the ceremony. Even though we'd seen each other outside, the moment of the wedding itself happening, seeing each other at each end of the aisle, walking toward my future, that was still FILLED with emotion. I don't think that being the official first look would have changed a thing. It really is all in what you make of it.

Another thing to think about: how intimate do you want it to be? For this wedding, this couple wanted it to be completely private. It was their moment, and it could not have been sweeter (my husband and I also were planning this, but I don't think we really made that clear enough to our family, because, well, EVERYONE was there, but it's fine 😂 we love them). A first look before the wedding can really be just about the two of you, or it can be in the moment of the wedding itself, as you take it all in together, walking down the aisle. Which feeling sounds most important to you?

If you are still torn, brides often do a first look with their father or another significant figure, and I LOVE it when they do this. It gives the best of both worlds, and it's the one thing I wish I had done differently on my own wedding day. I don't think I would've done that in place of my first look with my husband, but I would've done it beforehand.

At the end of the day, you decide what each moment is to you. This is my experience.

So, what are your thoughts? First look before, or save it for the wedding?

Family Sessions: Why Candid Beats Perfect

Big groups or small groups, people don't like to sit still--toddlers especially don't like to sit still.
My sessions are full of movements and activities.

Oh, your toddler likes it when you throw them in the air? Get them up there!

What? Your child just learned how to walk and loves to run and play chase? Start playing!

If the moment fits, we'll do some of your family sitting or standing altogether, but if we've got movers? I'm going to prompt some movement and activity so I can see the personality on your kiddos' faces (this brings out the joy in the dads, too! 😉)

Everyone's smiles look so much more genuine. And guess what? In between the fun, you naturally fall into positions that look like I had you standing and posing the whole time.

Candids are my favorites. They will forever beat "perfect" poses in my book.

Summer and fall are the BEST for family sessions! Message me or head to my site to get yours booked and start planning our fun.

Not all wedding photographers provide the same experience. You deserve to be taken care of before, during, and after your wedding.

I wrote an article to help you learn how to vet your photographer, as well as what red flags to watch out for. If you have more questions, add them below!

And just for fun, we're sharing a photo from my own wedding. I may not have taken it, but it makes me really happy.
