Some friends and I were gearing up for a fossil hunt here in North-Central Florida when we heard the Dinosaur-like calls of cattle coming up the adjacent property. This, along with being surrounded by Cypress, Palm, Oak and Spanish Moss made us feel like we had been transported back in time. Even the oppressive heat this particular morning had our primitive need for water kicking in, and we couldn't wait to dip ourselves into the coffee colored river, where we would further immerse ourselves into the past, discovering fossils from nearly 30 million years ago. This hunt resulted in an ancient Rhino tooth, a scientifically significant specimen that now resides in The Florida Museum of Natural History for research.
It's incredible to know that much like the cattle, Rhino's and other bizarre animals roamed here millions of years ago. This is one of a few musings that makes me feel lucky to be alive. To be able to touch the past with my hands and ponder on all of our planets great mysteries is often what keeps me motivated in an otherwise discouraging world.
