Did you know that Brown Pelicans were listed as an endangered species from 1970 to 2009? Even more incredible, is that Galveston played a pivotal role in their recovery.

After populations plummeted due to DDT, (a pesticide once widely used to control insects in agriculture and insects that carry diseases.)

Conservation efforts including pelican reintroduction programs centered around Pelican Island and Galveston Bay specifically Deer Island, helped restore a thriving breeding population of Brown Pelicans along the Texas coast.

This was one of five or six young Raccoons on the East End of the seawall. They were incredibly playful climbing all over the rocks, tugging on each other like playing king of the hill, and playing with anything they could get their paws on. Watching young animals explore the world for the first time is a great reminder to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life, even the ones we’ve experienced a hundred times before.

I got super lucky to Watch this Tri-Colored Heron hunt along East Beach, it was an incredible experience. He was so focused on catching minnows, that he allowed me to get surprisingly close to him! Whats fascinating to me, was watching him learn in real time. Moments like these remind me of how raw, and adaptable wildlife can be. I was able to get some great photos of the guy, so stay tuned for those!

Here is the full photo from my last reel.

Most people might crop out or remove the person in the background, but to me, they’re part of the story. Two perspectives exist in this image: a volunteer cleaning the beach and helping protect the environment, and a Great Blue Heron that has no understanding of the work being done on its behalf. While the heron goes about its day, someone in the background is quietly doing their part to preserve the habitat it calls home. Sometimes the most important parts of conservation happen outside the frame we focus on.

After a lot of self discovery over the past year or so, I have come to realize that every fiber of my being craves the outdoors. So Ive decided to commit to that part of me. Being a hermit inside and streaming video games just makes me feel hollow, unaccomplished, and restless. Human lives are short, I’d rather spend that time outdoors, rather than fabricating a false sense of reality inside a climate controlled box.

So get ready for more of me to come, I still plan on making content but content that aligns more with myself and my goals.

To celebrate this I’m posting one of my very first photographs. This was captured on my first DSLR camera, and I’ve got to say I’m pretty proud of it. I think the composition is good and the editing for what I envisioned when I took this shot is spot on!
