Cannon Township Fire Department

The Cannon Township Fire Department provides fire suppression and emergency medical services to approximately 14,388 residents across the 37-square-mile area of Cannon Township, including the Cannonsburg Ski Area. During 2025, the department responded to a total of 777 calls for service.

Department personnel consist of a full-time fire chief, one full-time deputy chief, and one paid-on-call deputy chief and one full-time captain, one lieutenant, and three firefighters operating across three shifts, supported by 25 paid-on-call firefighters. Through this staffing model, the department maintains 24-hour coverage with two full-time firefighters at Station 2 and paid-on-call coverage at Station 1.

The department operates a fleet of eleven frontline apparatus out of two stations, including Engine 3, Engine 4, Engine 8, Tender 5, Tender 6, Brush 7, Brush 10, Medic 9, Medic 13, Rescue 12, Rescue 14, and Utility 1. Between these apparatus, their alarm assignments include M9 and M13 being first due to all medicals; E4 and E8 being first due, E3 second due, and T5, T6, and U1 third due to all hydranted fires; E4 and E8 being first due, T5 and T6 second due, and E3 third due to all fires without hydrants; B7 and B10 being first due, M9 and R14 second due, and E4 and E8 third due to all brush/grass fires; M9, M13, E3, and E8 being first due and B7 and B10 second due to all accidents; B7 and B10 being first due to all wires down and roadway hazards; M9 and M13 being first due, with B7 and R12 being second due to all ice and water rescues. E3 may also respond to medicals as needed.

In addition to this, they maintain first alarm automatic aid agreements with Rockford, Plainfield Township, Courtland Township, Ada Township, and Grattan Township Fire Departments as a member agency of MABAS Division 3603, participating in mutual aid operations throughout Kent County.

Current apparatus assigned to Donald E. Goodell Station 2 (Administration) at 6878 Belding Road NE include:
- Engine 3, a 1999 HME 1871-SFO / 3D (1500 GPM pump/1000-gal. tank/30-gal. foam);
- Engine 4, a 2003 HME 1871-SL / Toyne (1750 GPM pump/1000-gal. tank/30-gal. foam);
- Tender 6, a 2020 Freightliner 114SD 6x4 / Toyne (1750 GPM pump/3000-gal. tank);
- Brush 7, a 2025 F-350 XLT 4x4 / Cascade Fire Equipment (50 GPM pump/250-gal. tank);
- Medic 9, a 2023 Ford F-350 XLT CC 4x4 with an ARE canopy;
- Rescue 12, a 2024 HoverTeck hovercraft with a trailer;
- Rescue 14, a 2013 Polaris Ranger 6x6 UTV ( # # GPM pump/50-gal. tank), transported in Special Operations 2, a 2013 Haulmark V-Nose TA enclosed trailer;
- and Utility 1, a 2017 Ford F-250 XLT CC 4x4 with an ARE canopy (Ex-Medic 9).

Current apparatus assigned to Harry Morris Jr. Station 1 at 8033 Cannonsburg Road NE include:
- Engine 8, a 2013 Spartan Metro Star / Toyne (1750 GPM pump/1000-gal. tank/30-gal. foam);
- Tender 5, a 2015 Freightliner 114SD 6x4 / Toyne (1750 GPM pump/3000-gal. tank);
- Brush 10, a 2022 Ford F-350 XLT 4x4 / Cascade Fire Equipment (50 GPM pump/250-gal. tank);
- Medic 13, a 2019 Ford F-250 XLT CC 4x4 with a ARE canopy;
- and Special Operations 1, a 2015 Haulmark Passport V-Nose SA enclosed / FD-Built insulation vacuum trailer.

Current vehicles assigned to a take-home status include:
- Car 1 (not shown), used by the fire chief, a 2016 Ford F-350 XLT FX4 (Ex-Brush 10).

A new 2026 Ford F-350 XLT CC 4x4 is currently being outfitted for service and will replace Medic 13 upon deployment. In addition, the department has a new Spartan Gladiator / Toyne pumper (1750 GPM pump/1000-gal. tank/30-gal. foam) on order with an expected delivery in 2027, which will replace the current Engine 3.

The department follows a five-year replacement cycle for its medic and brush units, allowing the vehicles to retain relatively low mileage and strong resale value. Once replaced, the outgoing units are typically sold for an amount close to their original purchase price, with the proceeds helping fund their replacements. In some cases, these vehicles aren’t sold but instead are repurposed within the fleet, such as Utility 1, which previously served as Medic 9, and Car 1, which previously served as Brush 10.

The Ada Township Fire-Rescue Department provides fire suppression and emergency medical services to approximately 14,745 residents across the 37-square-mile area of Ada Township, including the corporate offices of Alticor and its subsidiary companies Amway North America and Amway. During 2025, the department responded to a total of 757 calls for service.

Department personnel consist of a full-time fire chief, deputy chief, and three full-time firefighters operating across three shifts, one of which serves as fire inspector, supported by 13 paid-on-call firefighters. Through this staffing model, the department maintains 24-hour coverage with one full-time firefighter at Station 1 and paid-on-call coverage at Station 2.

The department operates a fleet of eleven frontline apparatus out of two stations, including Engine 4, Engine 7, Engine 12, Tender 5, Tender 6, Squad 3, Brush 5, Brush 10, Medic 8, Medic 9, and UTV. C1 may also respond to medicals as needed.

In addition to this, they maintain first alarm automatic aid agreements with Alto-Bowne Township, Cannon Township, Cascade Charter Township, Grand Rapids Charter Township, Grattan Township, Lowell Area, and Plainfield Charter Township Fire Departments as a member agency of MABAS Division 3603, participating in mutual aid operations throughout Kent County.

Current apparatus assigned to Station 1 (Administration) at 6990 Fulton Street East include:
- Engine 4, partially owned by Kent County, a 2013 Spartan Metro Star / Spencer (1500 GPM TM pump/1000-gal. tank/20-gal. foam);

- Medic 9, a 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV 4x4;
- and UTV, used for special events, a 2024 Can-Am Defender PRO HD10.

Current apparatus assigned to Station 2 at 7225 Knapp Street SE include:
- Engine 12, a 2003 E-One / Saulsbury (1000 GPM pump/750-gal. tank);
- Tender 5, a 2025 Freightliner 108SD / Spencer (1500 GPM pump/3000-gal. tank);
- Brush 10, a 2008 Ford F-350 XL 4x4 / FD-Built (50 GPM pump250-gal. tank);
- and Medic 8, a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe 4x4.

Current vehicles assigned to a take-home status include:
- Car 1, used by the fire chief, a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV 4x4.
- and Medic 8, serving as the paid-on-call duty car on weekends.

The department plans to purchase a new Chevrolet Tahoe PPV 4x4 and a new Chevrolet Silverado 4x4 in Spring 2027. The Tahoe will replace Car 1, with the current Car 1 subsequently being reassigned to replace Medic 8, while the Silverado will replace one of the brush units.

Alpine Township Fire Department - Structure Assignment, District 1

Alpine Township Fire responded to the 4000 block of Alpine Avenue NW for a reported commercial structure fire at approximately 17:29 hours. Engine 1 arrived to find significant fire conditions involving a storage unit, with the fire originating from a vehicle inside of the structure before spreading to the structure itself. Engine 1 stretched a handline and initiated fire attack while additional companies responded through automatic aid from Grand Rapids, Walker, and Plainfield Township, bringing two additional engines and two platforms.

Grand Rapids Truck 3 began ventilation operations while other companies continued fire suppression. The incident was subsequently upgraded to a second alarm, bringing additional resources from Sparta and Wright-Tallmadge. Engine 3 was able to get a knock on the fire within the unit itself, although the fire had spread through the roof and was flowing through the ventilation holes. Shortly after, a portion of the roof collapsed, throwing smoke at the crews below and prompting crews operating on the roof and inside the structure to withdraw as they moved to a defensive mode of fire attack, with Truck 3 transitioning to an aerial-only suppression operation using their master stream and later being supported by Walker Platform 1.

The fire was brought under control, with crews completing ventilation and overhaul operations and opening up other units to check for exposure.

Grand Rapids Fire Department - Division Avenue Station, "La Loma"

The Grand Rapids Fire Department Division Division Avenue Station covers north of 28th Street SE / the southern city boundary to south of Franklin Street SE, and east of US-131 / the Grand River to west of Eastern Avenue SE, within the City of Grand Rapids. During 2025, the station responded to a combined total of 3,159 calls for service.

Prior to the current station, which officially opened in January 1926, Station 10 operated out of a station at 100 Hall Street SW, this station was in service till the opening of the current station, and after closure by the department, was transferred to the Grand Rapids Police Department and became Precinct 3. On December 26, 1979, the current station was renamed to Station 12 when Engine 10 was moved to Franklin Street Station and Engine 12 moved in, and it was renamed again back to Station 10 in the mid 2000s. The current station was the first station to be built for motorized fire apparatus in the City of Grand Rapids, and is exactly 100 years old.

The station is going to be replaced by a newer and more modern station farther down on Division Avenue from the current station at 1823 Division Avenue South and is set to open in late September 2026, upon opening Car 97 will be transferred to it from the LaGrave Avenue Station, Weston Street Annex.

Current apparatus assigned to the Division Avenue Station at 1734 Division Avenue S include:
- Battalion 5, the south battalion chief, a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV 4x4;
- and Engine 17, a spare acting as Engine 10, the south extrication engine company, 2005 E-One Cyclone II (1500 GPM pump/750-gal. tank) (Ex-Delaware City Fire Company).

Engine 10’s frontline, a 2020 Rosenbauer Commander (1500 GPM pump/750-gal. tank/foam) with a 2024 Rosenbauer refurb, is currently out of service while undergoing repairs following a head-on motor vehicle collision in January 2026 and is expected to return to service in January 2027. Engine 15 had been serving as the permanent acting spare for Engine 10 during this period, but is currently also out of service due to electrical issues.

Alpine Township Fire Department

The Alpine Township Fire Department provides fire suppression and emergency medical services to approximately 14,103 residents across the 36-square-mile area of Alpine Township. During 2025, the department responded to a total of 1,286 calls for service.

Department personnel consist of a full-time fire chief, full-time fire inspector, three full-time lieutenants, and three full-time firefighters operating across three shifts, supported by 17 paid-on-call firefighters. Through this staffing model, the department maintains 24-hour coverage with a full-time lieutenant and firefighter at Station 1 and paid-on-call coverage at Station 1.

The department operates a fleet of nine frontline apparatus out of two stations, including Car 1, Medic 1, Engine 1, Engine 3, Tender 3, Brush 3, and Special Ops 1 and 2. Between these apparatus, their alarm assignments include M1 being first due to all medicals; E1 and E3 being first due to structure fires and motor vehicle accidents within Districts 1 and 2, depending on station assignment; T3 being second due to all structure fires in Districts 2 and 3; B3 being first due to all brush/grass fires township-wide; R5 being second due to all structure fires and first due to all technical rescues township-wide; and SO1 and 2 due for any rural patient transports and search and rescues. C1 may also respond to medicals as needed.

Station 1 primarily covers the area between Walker Avenue NW and Division Avenue N, from 4 Mile Road NW to 7 Mile Road NW, while Station 3 primarily covers the area between Walker Avenue NW and Division Avenue N, from 7 Mile Road NW to 10 Mile Road NW. Station 2 serves the area between Walker Avenue NW and Kenowa Avenue NW, from 4 Mile Road NW to 10 Mile Road NW. Engine 1 and Engine 3 regularly rotate between Stations 1 and 3, allowing either apparatus to serve as the first-due engine within those response areas.

In addition to this, they maintain first alarm automatic aid agreements with Walker, Sparta, Plainfield Township, and Wright-Tallmadge Township Fire Departments as a member agency of MABAS Division 3603, participating in mutual aid operations throughout Kent County.

Current apparatus assigned to Station 1 (Administration) at 1100 Henze Drive SW include:
- Engine 1, a 2019 Rosenbauer Commander (1500 GPM TM pump/750-gal. tank);
- Medic 1, a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 LT CC 4x4 with an ARE canopy;
- Rescue 5, a 2004 Spartan Metro Star / Crimson walk-around;
- Car 1, used by the fire chief, a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 CC 4x4 with an ARE canopy;
- and Utility 1, used by the fire inspector, a 2026 Chevrolet Equinox AWD.

Current apparatus assigned to the Station 3 at 610 9 Mile Road NW include:
- Engine 3, a 2010 Spartan Metro Star / Spencer (1500 GPM TM pump/1000-gal. tank/CAFS);
- Tender 3, a 2014 Kenworth T370 / Spartan ER (750 GPM pump/3000-gal. tank);
- Brush 3, a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD LT CC 4x4 / FD-Built (50 GPM pump/200-gal. tank);
- and Special Ops 1 and 2, both 2014 Polaris Sportsman EXT 4x4 ATV’s, transported on the Special Ops Trailer, a 2013 Construction Trailer Specialists TA flatbed trailer;

A new 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT CC 4x4 is currently being outfitted for service and will replace Car 1 upon deployment. In addition, the department has a new Freightliner / Toyne (1750 pump/3000-gal. tank) on order with an expected delivery in October 2026, that will serve as Tender 1; with this, the department plans to buy out the county-owned portion of Engine 3.

Plainfield Township Fire Department - Water Shuttle Operations

On July 29, members of the Plainfield Township Fire Department hosted a multi-department water shuttle training exercise at Northview High School alongside the Alpine Township, Sparta, and Cannon Township Fire Departments.

Throughout the training, crews practiced maintaining a continuous water supply. An engine company supplied multiple attack lines and a master stream while being fed by a second engine, which in turn received water from a rotating shuttle of three tenders. As each tender emptied, it went around to refill while another immediately took its place.

Plainfield Township was also able to utilize their drone.

Grand Rapids Fire Department - Structure Assignment, District 11

Grand Rapids Fire responded to the 800 block of Sherman Street SE for a reported residential structure fire at approximately 13:37 hours. Engine 11 arrived to find significant fire and smoke showing from the Bravo-Charlie corner of a wood-frame, two-story, single-family residential dwelling and stretched a line for fire attack. Additional companies conducted a primary search, ventilation, and support efforts. Cadets assisted crews with hose and equipment cleanup.

The fire was brought under control, with ventilation and overhaul operations being completed.
