Why I ask so many questions before your wedding.

There’s a multitude of reasons why photographers ask A LOT of questions before any shoot, let alone your wedding day.

The last thing I want is to leave Grandma out of a family photo because I didn’t know her name or know that she was someone you wanted included. 😂

Understanding your personalities, your family dynamic, what’s important for you to see in your photos, what you’re worried about, and what moments matter most to you—the list goes on and on.

And honestly, I can ask all of these questions and I guarantee that after the wedding, I’ll think of another one I should’ve asked for the next one.

But that’s kind of the point.

The more I know beforehand, the better prepared I am when your wedding day actually arrives. It helps avoid awkward situations, lets me know what needs to be a higher priority, and gives me a better idea of how I can serve you throughout the day.

So if I end up sending you what seems like a completely random question, I promise there’s probably a reason for it.

I’d rather ask the question beforehand than wish I had on your wedding day.

Your photographer should be more than just someone with a camera. 📸

Now, let me clarify. I’m not saying you should get your friend to photograph your wedding. 😂 Having someone who knows what they’re doing, and more importantly, knows how to communicate that effectively, can make a much bigger difference in your photos than you might think.

A good photographer helps the day go by smoother and keeps things flowing. A GREAT photographer keeps you comfortable, knows how to work with different personalities, and adapts to the things that will inevitably pop up throughout the day.

And honestly, you won’t really know if your photographer is the right fit until you spend some time with them.

That’s one of the reasons I always recommend doing an engagement shoot before the wedding. It gives you a chance to get comfortable in front of the camera, see how your photographer works, and figure out if you actually enjoy having them around.

Because you’re going to be spending a LOT of time with them on your wedding day. You want to make sure they’re someone you trust and feel comfortable with.

The nuances of editing from a photographers perspective:

When you get things right in camera, a lot of the editing is simply about bringing out the colors, adjusting the lighting, and making the image look the way you envisioned it.

But sometimes, it’s not that easy.

The lighting might not be ideal, you can’t quite find the right angle, or even the lens you have on might not be the best fit for the situation.

Being able to adapt to whatever the wedding day throws at you is one of the hardest parts of being a photographer—but it’s also one of the most rewarding.

Because sometimes, the best photos come from making the most out of a less-than-perfect situation.

POV: You hired a photographer who makes you forget the camera is even there.

Just a few of my favorite shots from this year, and most of them weren’t posed.

When you’re comfortable with your photographer, you’re able to relax, have more fun, and actually enjoy your day instead of worrying about where you’re supposed to stand or what you’re supposed to do.

One of the best ways to make sure you’re comfortable is an engagement session. It gives you a chance to see how your photographer works, get comfortable in front of the camera, and make sure you actually enjoy being around them before the wedding day.

“I don’t want to spend my entire wedding day taking pictures.”

Honestly? Neither do I. 🤣

Your wedding day is about more than getting a bunch of photos. You should actually get to enjoy it. I don’t want to hold you captive for hours and you feel like you’re missing out on other key parts of the day.

Family photos, bridal party, bride and groom portraits, and all of the other things we need to get done are important. But so is getting back to your reception, spending time with your family, dancing, laughing, and actually being present for the day you’ve spent so much time planning.

I want you to remember the whole day. And if memories get fuzzy, that’s why I’m there documenting it all.

How much time do we REALLY need for wedding photography?

This is a question people ask all the time, and for good reason. You don’t want to book too little and end up missing important moments, but you also don’t want to book more time than you actually need and feel like you wasted money.

There are a few things that can help you figure out how much time you’ll need:

1. Your timeline.
You need one more than you think. Having a good timeline will give you a much better idea of how much photography coverage you actually need. (Check out my pinned post on my page for more about timelines.)

2. Your photographer!
The person who deals with weddings every week is going to have a much better understanding of how long things typically take. At the very least, they should be able to give you a much better idea of what you’ll need based on your plans.

3. The type of wedding you’re having.
If it’s an elopement or a small ceremony, you’ll likely need somewhere around 1–3 hours.

For most weddings, 4–6 hours can cover a good portion of the day.

For full-day coverage or larger weddings, 8–10 hours is usually a better starting point.

One last thing: I recommend booking slightly more time than you think you’ll need—usually about an extra hour.

I don’t say that just so you spend more money. It gives you some wiggle room if something runs long. And trust me, unexpected things happen on wedding days that can throw the entire timeline off.

Having that extra time can mean the difference between feeling rushed and actually being able to slow down and enjoy the day.

The best thing about being a wedding photographer is the ability to look at things from a different perspective. Manipulating angles, mirrors, light. There are so many ways to make your vision come to life and the reward is clients that can’t stop looking at their own photos.

Sometimes the vision doesn’t always work for a multitude of reasons. The only thing you can do is try and move on, especially when on a timeline. Some shots just don’t make the cut in the editing process. Interested in learning about timelines? Check my Facebook profile for that!

“Do I really need a timeline for my wedding?”

Short answer? Yes, absolutely.

Having a timeline (and sticking to it) makes your wedding day run so much smoother. It helps everyone know where they need to be and when, which means less stress and more time to actually enjoy your day.

From a photography standpoint, so many of the moments we capture depend on good timing.

• Getting ready
• Guest arrival
• Ceremony
• Grand entrance & first dance
• Speeches
• Bride & groom portraits

And honestly, that’s just the beginning. A wedding timeline usually includes a lot more details in between all of those moments. Without a plan, it’s easy for the day to start feeling rushed or stressful.

One thing I always recommend is scheduling your bride and groom portraits as close to an hour before sunset as possible—also known as golden hour. The light is soft, flattering, and consistently creates some of my favorite images from the entire day.

A well-planned timeline doesn’t just help your photographer—it helps your entire wedding day flow naturally so you can spend less time worrying about the schedule and more time making memories.
