The scanning electron microscope (SEM) generates images in grayscale. There are no glass optics involved (go here: https://myscope.training/SEM_SEM_Basics). Adding color is a personal choice and is not necessarily based on what the true color of the subject is, or should be.

Creating art with the electron microscope does not require identifying what the subject is. Think about that for a while and tell me your thoughts.

Etude in Trypophobia

One of my friends admitted to having Trypophobia, a pathological fear or aversion to cluster of holes. This piece is a pattern created from the center portions of a centric diatom from the Hudson River. But doing this I think a triggered trypophobia in myself. This reminds me of when being the age of four and getting my smallpox vaccination and watching the lesion pattern develop. It was not pleasant. Thank you, Dr. Tauger, of Yonkers, NY truly scarring me for life!
