I want to thank everyone who posted, sent messages, or called me to wish me a happy birthday. It was a wonderful day spent with my lovely wife, Kathy Tibaldo Carpenter. We spent the day in Rockport and Fulton. I had the opportunity to see some historical locations, eat some wonderful food, and take a few photos. Thanks again everyone for a memorable birthday! Here are a few shots from the day.

*******Announcement******* The Galveston County Fair has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I go back to the Runge Park Days when my dad, Jack Carpenter, was a board of director. I grew up building pens, hauling hay, working in the rodeo arena, and all of the other things that needed to be done to produce our county fair. I met my wife, Kathy, at the fair at Runge Park. I became a director while still at Runge Park and saw the move to Jack Brooks Park in 1983. It was my privilege to work on entertainment, commercial exhibits, and scholarship committees during two different tenures as a director.

I have been a photographer since before I could drive. I have been taking pictures at the Galveston County Fair for over 2 decades and have photographed kids and now their kids in the livestock shows.

All good things must come to an end…so I am officially announcing my retirement as your fair photographer. It has been my pleasure to serve the exhibitors and directors for these many years. Our support will continue. We are lifetime members and we plan to visit the fair as spectators. Our heart and support will always be with the Galveston County Fair as they strive to support the youth of our county.

Kathy will verify that I never get rid of anything, so my archives from this year and years past will remain available on my website. Please contact me for anything you need.

Due to Internet issues at fairgrounds, I have been unable to load all of the photos from tonight. I will try again in the morning to find a decent Internet connection to get these finished. Thank you for your patience. I will post here when the photos are completed.

This old house....
One of the greatest advantages of living in the rolling hills of central Texas is the abundance of old barns, farmhouses, and commercial buildings on the landscape. Here's one that has always fascinated me. It's located near High Hill, the home of St. Mary of the Nativity Catholic Church. I can only imagine the history of this old house. Although not a large house, but I'm certain it was likely built by the family that lived there when it was new. Probably not by himself, but with the help of family and the community around him. My research of the Churches and other buildings in the area has shown that this type of teamwork was common. If only the hard things could be simple again......

It’s 2023! Time for something new. I’ve been fortunate to photograph a lot of people, places, and things I see on the backroads both near me and in our travels here in Texas and beyond. I love history and I try to tie that into my photography whenever I can. Beginning today, I will publish one of my photos on the first Monday of each month along with the story that goes with it. Some historical, some humorous, and some that just pique my interest. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed the journey that led me to them. Here’s the first one!
#1 Moravia Store, Moravia Texas
On FM 957, just south of Schulenburg, Texas, lies the old town of Moravia. Settled in 1881, the town was named in honor of the settler’s homeland, Moravia, Czechoslovakia. Built in 1889, Moravia Store started as a two-story saloon. It had a saloon in the front, a dry goods store in the back and the second floor was a dance hall. The store has been open almost continuously since then and is still popular today as a local hang out that serves drinks, food and often live music. The polka called “Moon Over Moravia” was inspired by this local gem. It is run by the beloved Henrietta Filip. Henrietta asked me to produce a photo of the store and that’s what you see here. However, there is much more to see inside. I highly recommend a visit to Moravia Store to see it for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.
