I started Uheheu in 2016 to capture the beauty of the ocean from above and below. Our goal is to inspire others to love the ocean as much as we do.

happy world seabird day. I recently learned of the origins of this day. On July 3rd 1844 fishermen killed the last remaining pair of great auks. It was the last confirmed sighting of this now extinct species. Hawai`i is no stranger to extinction with many highly vulnerable species. Many of us live in a constant state of anxiety as some species might be disappearing soon. A small group (relative to population of Hawai`) are actively working to rehabilitate these populations and you can help no matter where you are. is raising money to preserve a habitat on the big island. Please donate if you can (even a dollar helps) and or share the fundraiser with your friends and family. I’m confident with your help we can reach his goal!

This is my favorite picture I’ve taken of a Hawaiian petrel this far. Finally after 5 years of trying to get a decent photo!

our encounter yesterday. not happy. can’t stop thinking about it.

update: apologies for not providing more details. We Did get in the water to assess the wrap up close. The diameter of the line was too thick to cut safely with the tools we had onboard. Keep in mind this animal was around 18ft long. While not the outcome we wanted we did take photos and submitted them to Hawaii Uncharted Research Collective.

Very sad to hear that folks are allegedly shooting dolphins in Hawaii. These citizen science contributed photos are awesome tools for researchers to piece together these incidences and learn more about the threats these animals face. Hope to learn more about this individual in the near future! I highly recommend following Cascadia Research Collective to stay up to date!

Happy World Whale Day. It’s easy to get carried away with the negative news about the ocean and marine mammals. Today I’m focusing on the fact that 40 years ago only 1400 humpbacks were found around Hawaii. With the hard work and dedication of legislators, educators, activists, conservationists, scientists and researchers their population is 15,000+
