Timber x Xena pups are here.

Timber (74-lb fox red British Lab) is a well-mannered, methodical worker — not a high-strung dog, but one that makes every retrieve count. The perfect gentleman’s gun dog.

Xena (41-lb black British Lab) is a Goose Guide’s dog with seasons of heavy retrieves under her belt. She’s also a family dog with excellent manners and a true people pleaser.

The result? Black and darker yellow pups bred for balance — calm at home, driven in the field.

Timber is 9 (What! Where’d the time go?). Still acts like he’s 3 and is one of the most talented dogs I’ve ever seen and somehow even better to have around the house. I’m also pretty sure he’s convinced he’s just one of the guys. And to be honest, I’m not sure there’s a guy I’d rather have around.

My family and I spent an incredible couple nights under the stars this summer, capturing the Northern Lights and the Milky Way. There’s something magical about photographing the night sky; it’s always worth the effort. Capturing both time-lapses and still frames is like opening a present on Xmas morning when you get the images back to the computer and begin to edit.

For these shots, I used my Canon R5 paired with a Canon 15-35mm RF f/2.8 lens. I set the aperture at f/4—not too wide, but just enough to let in a good amount of light while giving me some wiggle room with the depth of field. When there were objects in the foreground I’d shut it down even more, this setting helped ensure everything was sharp. I had to rely heavily on my camera’s signal-to-noise ratio after increasing the ISO to maintain brightness, knowing I’d have some post-work in Lightroom to denoise the image.

A sturdy tripod is crucial to keep everything steady during long exposures, and I used a delayed shutter to avoid any camera shake.

When you’re out shooting, finding a dark spot away from city lights is key. Clear skies are a must, and including some foreground elements like trees or a dock with a sweet boat, adds depth to the scene.

Finally got out chasing muskies for the first time this year, just before the water temps got close to 80°. Managed to go on the only day a bunch of out-of-staters came to my local lake to host musky league. Long story short, conditions sucked, didn’t move a fish, and that was the story everyone had back at the launch! But, at least I got out there!

With work and welcoming a new baby boy into the world, time has been limited. My daughter prefers targeting crappies or bass, and she’s going to get what she wants! All I care about is that she wants to be out there with me.

The North Woods is calling, and we’ll be headed to the Leech Lake area for most of August, which will hopefully offer some lower water temperatures and give us more family time together in the boat.

You can bet there will be some Mountain Dew with me because anyone with kids understands the lack of sleep that’s happening in this household right now!
