Day one of the Amazon extension is in the books — and it earned it. Ferry ride, long drive, road work delays, roads that tried to shake the fillings out of our teeth. We finally rolled into camp somewhere deep in the Amazon, dust and all.

No rest for the wicked though — straight into a night boat excursion to hunt for snakes and the giant of the river system: the black caiman. Cool fact — black caimans are the largest predator in the Amazon basin, growing past 16 feet, and were hunted to near-extinction for their skin before protections brought them back.

We got lucky. Found this juvenile black caiman up on the bank and got to photograph it. Big things ahead this trip.

Giant anteater playing peek-a-boo with us! Caught this one peeking around the trunk in that golden morning light, snout low and cautious before it decided we weren't worth worrying about.

Giant anteaters have no teeth at all — they rely entirely on a 2-foot-long sticky tongue that flicks in and out up to 150 times a minute to slurp up ants and termites. They can eat 30,000+ insects a day but never wipe out a colony, moving on after a quick raid so the nest survives for next time.

Last day of Session 2, and we went out with a bang.

Two giant anteater sightings at sunrise to kick things off. Found the marmosets crossing on the ground and sat with them for a while — always a treat.

Also got the juvenile blue hyacinth macaw today. Last week it never left the nest, always tucked in with its parents — now it's out and already quite big!

Closed things out with a pygmy owl and two burrowing owls. They weren't interested in going back into the burrow, but they kept us entertained anyway.

Nearly four weeks out here, and it's been an incredible run — epic sightings every single day. The more time I spend in the Pantanal, the more I understand this place: the individual animals, their behaviors, the natural drama that plays out here. It never stops teaching me something new.

Sad to see this session come to a close, but grateful for every bit of it. I'll miss the thrill of the jaguar hunts most of all.

Last full day in jaguar land, and it delivered even under gray skies. ☁️

Cold, gloomy, rain in the forecast — but we started strong with an early morning sighting of Marcela and her two cubs. A perfect way to open the day.

Pushed further upriver after they moved on and came across a new jaguar for me — Benita, sporting a fresh gash on her head. Wonder what story that tells.

The rain caught up with us, so we headed in for lunch. Back out after, we found Ti on the hunt — but she gave us the slip and vanished into the brush.

The rest of the afternoon slowed down, so we turned our lenses to the birds instead.

One more half day left in jaguar land. Not done yet — let's see what this last morning brings.

Medrosa struck again.

This time she launched from a tree straight down onto a caiman — an ambush technique that shows exactly why she's an apex predator in this ecosystem. No hesitation, no wasted movement. Just pure precision.

Jaguars have the strongest bite force of any big cat relative to their size — enough to crush through bone. Where lions and tigers typically go for the throat, jaguars often bite straight through the skull, dispatching prey almost instantly. That's exactly how caimans get taken down out here.

Medrosa's proven it again and again this trip. A true master of her craft.

Pantanal Session 2 is winding down, but we’ve still got a few more days in the field. 🐆

The heat hasn’t slowed the jaguars down one bit — action-packed encounters right up to the end.

Hot, windless day in the Pantanal, but the jaguars didn’t disappoint — 11 individuals before lunch! Spent the afternoon with giant otters fishing, then capped off the evening with a new male I’ve never photographed before, Bagua. Exciting day out here, can’t wait to see what the next few days have in store.

Day 3 and we’ve made it to jaguar land. Spent the morning on the Rio Claro River picking up birds in flight — black hawks, black-collared hawks, a few kingfishers. Then, just before reaching the houseboat, we found two yellow anacondas mating. Epic day out here.
