I just photographed a wedding with my father’s old film camera. Film is a pretty new part of my work, but really I’m just returning to where everything began.
My father, Paul Meadows, photographed weddings in Lancashire throughout the 1970s and ’80s, entirely on film. Some of my earliest memories of photography are of looking through the viewfinders of his cameras, fascinated by the little world framed inside them. Even my favorite toys were always kaleidoscopes and the View-Master, a little red box with photo reels, that I could look through and see wonderful places through the viewfinder.
Recently I’ve started bringing film into more wedding days and scanning the negatives at home, and it has made me fall in love with photography all over again.
Some of these photographs were taken using one of my father’s own wedding cameras, a Pentax ME Super left to me when he passed almost 35 years ago. Carrying it now, seeing again through his viewfinder, and using it to photograph a wedding all these years later has reconnected me to him, and to my childhood memories of his work, in a way that I never expected.
I’m still only at the beginning of this journey, but I am loving every single moment of it, more to come soon 🤍🎞️
