Recently, a concern was brought up publicly regarding the use of animals in my photography sessions, and I want to take a moment to address it openly.
Animal welfare is extremely important to me, both personally and professionally. I would never purchase or use an animal simply for the financial benefit of my business. Every animal that belongs to me is part of my family and is cared for with love, respect, and long-term commitment.
My husbands side of the family & myself have always had a deep connection to agriculture and livestock. We raise cattle, and the animals you see in my sessions—like my two Longhorn steers—are my personal animals that I care for daily. They are not props; they are loved members of our farm. They go on walks with our family, interact with our dogs, and are handled gently and respectfully every single day. (Fun fact, the boys actually love to snuggle)
The same care and respect extends to every animal I work with, whether that’s chickens, ducks, cattle, or dogs. Their safety, comfort, and wellbeing will always come first.
When I photograph livestock or animals for other ranches and farms, I maintain that exact same level of care and professionalism. I never push animals into situations that would make them uncomfortable or unsafe for them or for my clients. Having been around animals as much as I have, I’ve learned to understand their behaviors and cues, and I take that knowledge seriously when working around them.
I’ve also spent time researching and educating myself on safe and ethical practices when photographing animals. When working with animals that belong to other people, their owners are always present, and we communicate clearly beforehand to ensure we are on the same page about boundaries, safety, and the wellbeing of the animals involved.
It is honestly very sad that I feel the need to make a post like this. Please keep in mind that unjustified or uninformed comments can have real impacts on small businesses and the people behind them.
I’m incredibly proud of the environment we’ve created for our animals and the way they are loved and cared for. I appreciate the many clients and community members who know and trust the heart behind my work.
Thank you for continuing to support my small business and the values that guide it.
