We have all seen the random Facebook posts, player rankings, “Top Prospect” lists and conversations about which organizations have the best teams.
Putting all of that aside, I think there is a more important conversation to have:
Who has the best developmental high school travel baseball program in Houston?
I have had the opportunity to spend time around some incredible baseball minds and to observe several programs for myself. I have seen a lot of good, but I have also seen areas where travel baseball organizations can and should do better.
There is absolutely a developmental side to this game. Some organizations prioritize teaching, individual improvement, baseball IQ, accountability and preparing players for what comes next.
Others appear to place most of their attention, resources and visibility on their elite teams.
For many parents whose children are not placed on the organization’s top team, it can feel like they are helping fund the program while receiving very little development, instruction or meaningful investment in return.
That is the part of the conversation that often gets ignored.
Development should not be limited to the most advanced, most recruited or most visible players. Every family paying to be part of a program should have a clear understanding of what development looks like for their athlete.
That includes:
⚾ Consistent instruction
⚾ Honest player evaluations
⚾ Individual development plans
⚾ Position-specific training
⚾ Baseball IQ and situational teaching
⚾ Strength, movement and arm-care education
⚾ Communication with players and parents
⚾ A legitimate pathway toward improvement
Winning matters. Exposure matters. College commitments and draft picks matter.
But those things do not always tell us whether an organization is developing the majority of the players wearing its uniform.
So, putting popularity, rankings and trophies aside:
Which Houston travel baseball organizations are truly committed to developing every player—not only the players on their elite teams?
Name the organizations that deserve to be part of the conversation and explain what they do well.
