Bride #01 | Dallas, 1998

Before it all, the processional of hundreds of bridal portraitures and weddings to follow for the next 28 years, there was this photograph.

My very first bridal portrait.

This image was photographed in Dallas in 1998 on a Mamiya 645 medium-format camera, using 3200-speed color film pushed one stop for additional contrast. Two ARRI 300W Fresnel tungsten lights created the dramatic, sculpted illumination.

This photograph represents much more than a bridal portrait to me.

It represents where it all began. Photo journalistic candid style photography aimed at capturing the essence of a moment rather than boring traditional posing that was popular at the time.

My Mom was my #1 fan of my photography.

When a beautiful capture happened, I would get excited about sharing them with her. Secretly, over the last 30 years shooting weddings, she was the first to see your epic moments.

You really begin to feel her absence in your heart not being here to share these moments with you. There must be a million ways she lived through your life but today I must learn to live a new life without her.

To my friends with their Mom’s, everyday is a blessing. Make new memories, take photographs and make a journal of your Mom’s life to cherish and to never forget.

Heaven has a new Angel today.

Learning to live without my Mom, with all these memories, how do I begin? There are no words that can truly capture this loss or the love she gave throughout her life. She loved my Dad, they just had their 60th wedding Anniversary but she loved her sons most of all. She didnt want to leave us and held on tight as her insidious cancer drained her life but never her spirit.

She was a mother and a teacher to many of my friends who grew up in Kingwood and had a passion for teaching British Literature. I will miss her everyday but there is absolutely no way to push through this without my Sobriety and the unconditional love and support of my family.

Thank you to everyone for your love, prayers, and support during this difficult time. Please keep our Hoffland family in your thoughts.
