Igloo Sky Glow - Point Pleasant, WV 2015
This remains a favorite image of mine. It was taken in the McClintick Wildlife Management Area, or "TNT area", of Point Pleasant a couple miles from where I grew up, in the heart of Mothman territory. This is a skyward facing star trail image inside one of the underground concrete bunkers, termed 'Igloos' due to their shape, that were used to store TNT manufactured here at the end of World War II. Gunpowder stored in this igloo spontaneously exploded in 2010, blowing the top and revealing the sky from the inside. The colors in the sky aren't really sky glow, but light pollution from the nearby power plant and town. You can see the remains of the trees growing up around it ringing the top of the dome and lightning bugs fluttering across the frame.
Many of the igloos still contain explosives stored within and are surrounded by ponds built to clean up the area of contaminants over time and prevent them from leaching out into other areas. The McClintick WMA now hosts a huge variety of flora and fauna, including many rare species.
It's worth mentioning, bordering this area will be the state's first 2000 acre hyper scale data center and microgrid that is expected to generate low frequency noise levels from 60-85dB that can travel for miles. For reference, sustained levels of 85dB are known to cause hearing damage. These facilities require all night lighting, generating even more light pollution known to disturb wildlife patterns and affect human health. Construction has already caused large scale flooding to neighborhoods nearby. Data centers of this size are known to require millions of gallons of water daily to cool the computer centers. The full impact to people living nearby and the impact to this environment that is already being used as a cleanup site for major contaminants is mostly unknown and is being pushed ahead without much assessment or feedback in service to an industry that appears largely built on hype with little upside to anyone who isn't a stock owner in tech.
