Perspective changes everything.

From where Larry was standing, the old Galena High School seems to rise above the trees…

Yet ask ten people what they see here, and you’ll likely hear ten different answers.

Some see a beautiful historic building.

Some see architecture.

Some see a landmark.

And those who walked its halls may see years of memories, friendships, lessons, victories, and dreams.

The places we remember are shaped not only by what they are, but by where we stood when we experienced them.

The Old Tree and the Swing

Long before the swing was tied to its branches, the tree was already here.

Standing.

Growing.

Watching seasons come and go.

Children may have come and gone too, leaving behind little traces of themselves—laughter carried on summer air, footprints worn through the grass, memories known only to the families who called this place home.

Today the swing hangs quietly beneath the branches, waiting.

Empty, yet somehow not lonely.

Because some places hold onto the stories entrusted to them.

And old trees are among the best storytellers of all.

Most visitors know it simply as Route 20.

But those of us who live here know that as you make your way into town, Route 20 becomes Decatur Street, and Decatur becomes Spring Street. The name changes, but the feeling stays the same.

For some, it’s the road leading to a weekend destination. For others, it’s the road that leads home.

The hills begin to rise. Familiar buildings come into view. The anticipation of Main Street, front porches, church steeples, and river bends settles in.

Whether you’re arriving for the first time or returning after years away, there’s a moment along this stretch when Galena begins to feel less like a place on a map and more like a heartbeat.

And if you’ve traveled it often enough, you know exactly where that feeling begins.

I love how Galena does this.

One moment you’re focused on the hill beneath your feet, and the next, a church rises between the trees and rooftops as though it’s been waiting there all along.

It’s one of those scenes that reminds me to keep looking around corners.

The sky above wasn’t finished talking.

The fields settled into shadow. The distant hills softened into silhouettes. Yet overhead, the clouds continued their conversation—stretching across the evening sky in strokes of blue, silver, and gold.

Some sunsets ask for attention.

Others invite you to stand quietly and listen.
