A flying camera is a better way to think about this DJI drone. This short segment from a recreational flight shows off the amazing low light abilities of the main camera of three on the aircraft. The quality of the video and stability of the platform is amazing.

Stay tuned for more aerial footage from recreational flights and eventually other footage from licensed flights

The belted kingfisher is one of the most difficult photographic subjects in the bird world. Constantly flying from place to place, it seems (to bird photographers) to know just when it is framed and focused—and leaps into the air with its chattering call before the shutter release cab be pressed.

I was very lucky to be able to sneak up on this one and it is one of my personal favorite photos because of how difficult it was to get.

Spring is in full gear and the birds are finding mates and building nests. This tree swallow was impressing a potential partner with a display of aerobatics as the two investigated nesting boxes at Daubenspeck Community Nature Park, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

European Starling—did you know there are four letter codes for every bird species? The “BBL Alpha Code” was introduced by the Bird Banding Laboratory (part of USGS and more than a century old!) to fit on the bands and make note taking simpler.

The codes are four letters long and *generally* follow the simple rule of two letters from the first word and two from the second. So our EUropean STarling friend is EUST.

For birds with more than two word long names, it’s two from the first and one from the 2nd and 3rd. So, for example a Red-bellied Woodpecker would be REWO but also could be REWP, while a Red-headed Woodpecker would be RHWO or RHWP.

While REWO/P *could* be a redhead, the red belly got to it first. Fortunately almost any sane version of the code will get you a valid one. It *is* convenient to have the short hand, try it!
