Rich Herrmann Photography Rich Herrmann Photography brings you the natural beauty of Iowa and the world through digital and film images and prints.

Nature photography has a special place in my heart since it may take a lifetime to fully understand the balances, forces, changes, inner workings and power of Nature. It's an honor and challenge to interpret and represent the natural world through a lens, to share it with others, and to understand its powerful ability to transform and change. I use a variety of techniques to create digital and fil

m images...at times using High Dynamic Range techniques if the scene has high contrast, or blending exposure-bracketed photos to layer the best of each one...but every once in a while, magic will happen and one shot captures the essence of a scene. In those moments, light is usually the single most influential element, and it becomes a wonderful experience that is hopefully conveyed to the viewer. My photography has been described as portraying nature in an honest, dramatic and beautiful way, and I look forward to sharing it with you!

Join me on this backpacking adventure to Lake Helene in the Rocky Mountain National Park, CO.

So many perspectives to explore once you hike the 3 miles to the lake, starting at Bear Lake. If you plan ahead, make a reservation to camp at Sourdough, a most excellent campsite (permits required).

Wonderful views of Odessa Lake, Notchtop Mountain, Knobtop Mountain and Little Matterhorn can be found as you make your way around the lake. So many compositions and vantage points are available if you're willing to scramble a bit across boulders and rock formations.

Don't miss this wonderful hike, and if you have enough steam, continue on for a mile to Odessa Lake for spectacular views of the peaks surrounding Lake Helene.

Put together a video (comment section) from my recent trip to the Rainbow Lakes in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, CO.

From old growth forest, to several small lakes, to boulders and vistas of surrounding peaks, it was a joy to explore.

Backpacking permits are required for overnight stays, but it's an easy hike to the lakes (about a mile), so getting there for a quick day trip is doable. Each lake has it's own personality and vibe.

My favorite was the lake at the very western string of them, and is shown in the morning shots. Enjoy!

Diamond Lake has everything you'd want in a wilderness excursion. The views on the way up are diverse, from rocky traverses, multiple crossings of water, to pristine open spaces and delicious views of Mt. Neva, South Arapaho Peak and Old Baldy.

This is a permit only camping area with specific spots, which keeps it in pristine condition. Hope you enjoy this 5 mile round trip journey from the Fourth of July trailhead to Diamond Lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, Colorado.

Last post from the series of Colorado Mountains!
It’s been an honor to visit and photograph these wonderful places.

Over the last few years I’ve been able to visit not only pristine wilderness areas, but also national parks, forests and open spaces in northern and central Colorado, hopefully capturing the essence of these landscapes.

This series includes my favorite images from those journeys. A good portion of these are from Rocky Mountain National Park, but others are from Routt, White River, Roosevelt, Arapaho and Gunnison National Forests, along with their wilderness areas.

Please enjoy this interpretation of light intertwined with majestic peaks and amazing wild places in Colorado! Let’s do what we can to protect these areas for all of us.
