One of my favorite things I’ve done in Zambia is create this documentary on Obed Kampamba and his family. Spending time with his extended family for Easter and watching him reflect on his 91 year life with vitality was a treat.
Cultural exchange is ever present during Peace Corps but it was fascinating to hear from Obed how he engaged in cultural exchange long before I was born during his trip to the United States in the 1970’s. During the moments we shared making this documentary, we were both very curious about the other’s home countries.
I first met Obed at a collaborative workshop on his farm that involved ten volunteers and the Forestry Department. After the workshop, I knew he had more stories to tell, so I reached out to him. He doesn’t live near my village but rather closer to town.
His story is unique, and I hope to share more stories in the year I have left here and beyond. These stories will come from my immediate community and the people I spend even more time with, unlike Obed, who lives farther away. I’m deeply thankful to him and his family for sharing their story.
