Annnnnnd back to astrophotography…

This was requested by a friend several months ago. I had to wait for the timing of it to be above the horizon, and that’s this time of year. But I digress.

Behold, the Pillars of Creation in the M16 Eagle Nebula. 🦅 These towering columns of gas and dust are where new stars are born, sculpted by intense radiation and stellar winds from nearby massive stars. ⭐🔭

• 🌍 Distance from Earth: Approximately 7,000 light-years away—about 41.1 quadrillion miles (41,100,000,000,000,000 miles).

• ⭐ Stellar Nursery: The towering pillars are filled with dense clouds of hydrogen gas and dust where new stars are actively forming.

• 🔭 Massive Structures: The tallest pillar stretches roughly 4 to 5 light-years in length, making it several times the distance between our Sun and its nearest neighboring star.

I mean, who doesn’t like low flying rotorcraft?

And U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City has some of the best crews out there.

I had the privilege of witnessing the Law Enforcement Torch Run as it passed through the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

The event featured dedicated public safety professionals from state and local agencies, all running in support of Special Olympics North Carolina. I would like to commend all the participants for their commitment to such a worthy cause.

In observance of National Police Week, we honor the law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. This week holds personal significance for me, as I remember several friends whose names are etched on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.

I stopped by the Wright Brothers National Memorial expecting to photograph a classic biplane peacefully minding its own business.

Then the unmistakable sound of a Fenestron tail rotor rolled in from the distance. Over the tree line came the “Coast Guard Orange” Dolphin (MH-65) making not one, but two slow flybys for the camera. Props (pun intended) to the flight crew for indulging my aviation photography addiction.

We’re lucky the military frequently visits First Flight Airport because seeing these aircraft up close never gets old. And honestly, it’s always a good day when the crew waves back before disappearing into the horizon✌️…or in this case, heading back toward ALC like the rock stars of rotary-wing aviation.
