A quiet gathering on a fallen log. The elegant straight-stalked entoloma (Entoloma strictius) stands above a scattering of raspberry slime mold (Tubifera ferruginosa), whose vivid red fruiting bodies add a burst of color to the forest floor.
Although slime molds are often found alongside fungi and produce spores in much the same way, they aren't true fungi. Instead, they're members of their own evolutionary lineage, having independently evolved a similar lifestyle in the damp, decomposer-rich world of the forest floor.
It's easy to overlook scenes like this, but they're reminders that every rotting log is a thriving ecosystem, home to countless organisms working together in ways we rarely notice.
