Nipaporn from Thailand 🇹🇭

Nipaporn is an artisan living in the mountains of northern Thailand with her three children. Earlier in life, she pursued vocational training as a goldsmith and later worked for six years as a quality controller in a Bangkok factory. Eventually, she returned to her home village, where she needed a stable way to support her family.

After seeing other women in her community earn income through hammock weaving, Nipaporn decided to learn the craft herself. Her first loan helped her purchase supplies and weave more consistently from home. The income has become her main source of support, giving her a safer and more flexible alternative to agricultural labor.

Nipaporn is now ready to continue growing her hammock business. This loan will help her invest in yarn and materials so she can maintain steady production, increase her earnings, and keep building a more secure future for her children.

This loan is important because it creates employment opportunities for vulnerable populations living in remote rural areas.

Before Taaluma was a business, it was just two college
students with backpacks.

While traveling through Uganda, our founders Jack &
Alley, came across a local fabric market. Alley had a
skirt made from a colorful piece of fabric she found.
Not wanting to be left out, Jack had a backpack made
from one too.

Something funny happened. People kept stopping
them."Where did you get that backpack?"

The backpack became a conversation starter. A simple
piece of fabric connected people who had never met,
sparked conversations about travel, culture, and
places far from home.

That moment planted a seed.

What if a backpack could do more than just carry your
stuff?

What if it could carry a story?

What if it could connect people to cultures around the
world?

And what if every backpack could help create
opportunity for someone else?

That tiny idea became Taaluma.

The name "Taaluma" means culture in Swahili, and that
mission still drives everything we do today. Every
