𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 #𝟲

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝘅𝗮𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆.

Since 1981, this uniquely Brazoria County tradition has brought families together for carnival rides, live music, great food, parades, and, of course... the giant mosquito.

To someone just passing through, it might look like an oversized inflatable bug.

But to many of us, it's a symbol of summer. It's where childhood memories were made, traditions were passed down, and another year of life in Brazoria County was celebrated.

Not every place becomes important because of what it is. Sometimes, it's because of what happens there.

𝗜'𝗺 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝘅𝗮𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗽𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼.

Christmas shopping at Wilson's in the Brazos Mall.

Looking through old newspaper ads while researching the mall's 50th anniversary has been a trip down memory lane.

If I could go back in time, I'd definitely be leaving with the McDonaldland playset and the Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle. 😄

I set out to find the history of Bigfoot in Brazoria County. What I found wasn't proof of a creature... but a forgotten piece of local folklore preserved in old newspapers, witness accounts, and the places where the stories began.

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗼 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝘇𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀.

Sometimes I start looking into an old building or a forgotten photograph, and before I know it I'm reading old newspapers, talking to longtime residents, and uncovering stories I never expected to find.

That's one of the reasons I love this page. It's not just about looking back... it's about rediscovering Brazoria County together.

☕ Weekend Find: A little piece of Brazos Mall history...

I found this vintage Joske's coffee mug while browsing estate sales this weekend. The bottom is marked "Made in Japan," a reminder of an era when many department stores imported quality housewares from Japan.

Joske's was one of the first anchor stores at Brazos Mall, and judging by the comments on recent posts, it's a store that so many of you still remember fondly. Whether it was shopping for clothes, Christmas gifts, or just walking through the mall, Joske's was part of a lot of family traditions.

I actually bought this mug just to share its story with all of you. I don't really need to keep it.

𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱-𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 $𝟰,𝟭𝟱𝟬.

This advertisement from the Plantation Development Company encouraged families to buy homes in the city's earliest years.

The ad promised monthly payments as low as $27.32, called Lake Jackson "a sound investment," and predicted the city would continue to grow.

Looking back today, it's fascinating to see what homeownership looked like when Lake Jackson was just getting started.
