Mother's Day is a complicated holiday. One that elicits a huge variety of emotions. A holiday that some people look forward to and others dread.
Last year, we had our first foster placement. He was three and surrounded by four kids calling me "Mom," so pretty soon he was calling me the same. At some point during a visit, his dad asked me βWhy is my son calling you mom?β Before I got a chance to respond, his wife turned to him and said βBecause when someone loves you and takes care of you, thatβs what you call them.β She taught me so much with her love and understanding.
I am so grateful for the women in my life who, having birthed children or not, show an all encompassing love for those in their lives. This woman in the picture, for example, who has loved and been loved by hundreds of children... being a teacher, a young women's leader, a horseback riding teacher, a friend and neighbor. You only have to know her to completely adore her. I am so lucky to be surrounded by women like this, who show me on a daily basis how to love fully.
Happy Mother's Day, friends, in whatever way that resonates with you. To all of you, with all your mixed and complicated feelings about this day. You are seen and loved and treasured.
