An Autumn Afternoon at Creation Falls

Here's a long exposure image I took of a very thirsty Creation Falls a few years ago while hiking in the Red River Gorge. Even though there was minor flow from the falls. The slow flow did help produce some bubbles and foam which added a little bit of geometric dimension to the foreground!

The Milky Way behind Hay Stack Rock

This is probably one of my favorite comps. I took this image 3 yrs ago during a weekend camping trip in the fall to the Red River Gorge. I hiked out to Auxier Ridge for some astro landscape. My goal was to get the MW behind Haystack Rock. I had a very narrow 30 min window between astronomical darkness and the MW core setting below the horizon. I had to be quick, and precise. Thanks to the PhotoPills app! It took a lot of the guess work out of the process. I was able to confirm my intended final image through the AR night sky overlay tool! I hope to revisit this comp again now that I have better equipment. I think this image was taken with an old Nikon D500 and a Tamron 10-24mm 3.5-4.5 DX lens? I'll have to go back and check the metadata from the image.

The Milky Way with a US Civil War Cannon

Here's an image from Camp Nelson last night with the meetup. Most of the participants were doing deep sky observations, while I decided to break away and explore the grounds for some astrolandscape comps I'd scouted earlier in the year. I got permission from the park rangers to explore on my own. This image with the Milky Way behind this cannon was one of the several compositions I obtained within my short shooting window. The image is a 20 image stack. I had to push my processing skills to the limits to battle the light pollution from the National Cemetery, and Lancaster on the horizon. I was still pleased with the image, and thankful to get the opportunity to shoot some astro at this historical location.

The Milky Way Rising Above the Red River

I captured this image of the Milky Way core perking through the trees in the distance. I planned this shot out, using the PhotoPills and PlanIt Pro apps. I waded about waist deep into the water to set up my camera and tripod. I used an intervelometer to shoot a series of images for about 45 min. I didn't want to stand in the water that long. Also, I had a small water snake that kept trying to run me off! 😂 I kept the best 20 images from the sequence, stacked them, and blended with a few images I light- painted with my flashlight.

The Blood Moon over the Half Moon

With the upcoming lunar eclipse approaching in a few days, I wanted to reshare this lunar eclipse image I captured back in May of 2022. I hiked out to Chimney Top overlook to observe and photograph the eclipse from this location. My intended composition was to get the "blood moon" over top of Half Moon Rock. I used the Photopills and Plan It Pro apps to confirm the alignment. I was nervous for the first half of the evening. Clouds were roaming the skies and I was worried the moon would be obscured during the eclipse. Luckily the moon had risen to a higher altitude above the low-laying clouds shortly before the eclipse started to shift from white to red!
