Downtown Fredericksburg’s skyline tells its history in rooftops and steeples. In this view, three of the city’s most recognizable landmarks rise above the historic district: the recently restored Renwick bell tower, the stately steeple of the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church, and the soaring spire of St. George’s Episcopal Church. Each structure reflects a different chapter of the city’s architectural story—from 19th‑century civic design to early American religious architecture and the craftsmanship that shaped the region.

The Renwick tower, part of the former courthouse complex, now stands fully stabilized and preserved after major restoration work completed in late 2025. Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church, long admired for its brickwork and classical influences, remains a defining presence downtown. And St. George’s Episcopal continues its role as one of the city’s most enduring congregational landmarks.

Infrared photography reveals light our eyes can’t see, and this black‑and‑white image of the Rappahannock River shows how dramatic that shift can be. Shot by Bryant Payden of B. Payden Photography in Historic Downtown Fredericksburg, the scene transforms as foliage reflects infrared light, turning bright and ghostlike against the darker sky and water. Details that normally blend into the landscape stand out with crisp contrast, giving the riverbank an almost winter‑like glow even in warmer seasons. It’s a look that combines science, technique, and artistry to show a familiar place in an entirely new way.

Infrared transforms the familiar into something otherworldly. This IRChrome shot of the Rotunda and Fawn at Chatham Manor shows how the landscape shifts when you capture light beyond what the eye can see. Infrared wavelengths sit above the visible spectrum—roughly 700nm and beyond—and normally never reach a camera sensor because built‑in filters block them. When you let that light in, foliage reflects it dramatically, creating the pale, glowing tones that make scenes feel almost dream‑carved.

The IRChrome filter, developed to echo the look of classic Kodak Aerochrome film, produces red and pink foliage with minimal processing while keeping architectural whites clean and natural. Unlike deeper 590–720nm filters that often need channel swaps, IRChrome gives the effect straight through the viewfinder, a major part of its appeal.

Chatham’s rotunda—a neoclassical pavilion tucked beneath the trees—takes especially well to infrared. The glowing canopy throws the statue of the small fawn into a calmer, softer relief, making the whole structure feel like a quiet pocket of time suspended in color the world doesn’t normally reveal.

Infrared often feels like an alternate version of history layered over the present, and places with strong architectural geometry—like this rotunda—tend to reveal that duality most vividly.

Chasing waterfalls hits different in infrared.

This 720nm IR take on Crabtree Falls in Nelson County Virginia flips the scene into something dreamlike—white‑glowing foliage, cool‑toned water, and the surreal contrasts you only get once you move beyond the visible spectrum.

Crabtree Falls is already a standout. It’s one of the tallest cascading waterfalls in the eastern U.S., dropping roughly 1,200 feet across multiple tiers as the trail climbs beside the creek. You get overlook after overlook, with the water never leaving your sight or your ears.

Infrared adds a layer you don’t normally see—turning familiar forest textures into something secret and otherworldly.

Nelson County opens up beautifully to this sweeping view of The Priest, a 4,063‑foot Blue Ridge peak that’s been a landmark for generations. The Appalachian Trail crosses right over its summit, and early settlers once farmed the valley below these slopes. Today the area blends quiet rural life with protected wilderness in the Priest Wilderness of the George Washington National Forest.

The climb up The Priest from State Route 56 is one of Virginia’s toughest, gaining about 3,000 feet with dozens of switchbacks—but the panoramic reward at the top has made it a favorite for hikers across the region.

A peaceful road, open fields, and the Blue Ridge rising beyond—this scene captures classic Nelson County.
