I want to say thank you for the overwhelming support on the pre-orders for my upcoming zine “Walking Svalbard” ❤️
This image was made outside of the seed vault which Longyearbyen is home to. I knew I wanted to make an image here because of its significance to Svalbard but I didn’t want to take the traditional approach of photographing the building in the way I had seen it online whilst researching for this project. I instead ended up photographing the light that it cast on the landscape. Interestingly enough this is one of a couple digital images that ended up making its way into the zine. I was working digitally whenever my medium format camera had frozen its internals entirely in the sub zero temperatures and I was waiting for it to return to a usable temperature. It was challenges like this that pushed me to try so many new things within the zine and this one is a nice example.

“Walking Svalbard” features 37 color images made across Longyearbyen, Svalbard. These images document the landscape of the world’s northern-most town during the dark season. Throughout these winter months, the 2000 residents of Longyearbyen live in 24 hours of darkness and extreme weather conditions

Hi, I’m Willem Verbeeck, a Belgian photographer based in Los Angeles. I’ve been working with some kind of camera for as long as I can remember. Back home in LA, I’m either walking around looking for my next photo or in my garage working on one of my projects. Porsche invited me over to Stuttgart for its 75th anniversary, where I was given an access-all-areas tour. It was the perfect chance to combine both of my passions: photography and cars. I spent the week in awe of some of its incredible workshops, secret archive rooms and, of course, driving a few of its very special cars. This past winter I was fortunate enough to spend an extended period of time in Longyearbyen, Svalbard to photograph the northern-most town in the world during the dark season. At this point I’m sitting on the final layout of a zine containing the work which has been beautifully designed by .amnas (not only the most talented designer I know, but also an amazing photographer himself). With what’s going on in the world at the moment it’s been quite difficult to decide when to continue with the printing as Mattias and I have been working on this project for the past months. Either way I’m incredibly excited to share more and hopefully show you the physical product sooner rather than later! Stay safe out there! ✌🏼✨
