Day 2 in Poland 🇵🇱

When I found out the was happening while I was in Warsaw (thanks to Adrian Dolecki at Studio Sport !!) I knew I had to find a way to be part of it. There was just one problem: the race was completely sold out 😭

I was ready to accept that maybe wasn’t meant to be. However, after a morning exploring the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, I felt inspired✨

I exist because of the determination and tenacity of my grandfather. So, in the spirit of Paul Blank, I decided to take a page out of his book and show up.

I went to bib pickup.

I shared my why.

Why I was in , why this history is personal, and why having the opportunity to run through alongside thousands of people honoring the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for this city would mean so much to me.

They were moved by my story and graciously let me register for the 10K 🥹

That night, I stood at the starting line among 14,000 runners, and what followed was one of the most memorable running experiences of my life.

The pride. The energy. The history. Warsaw’s incredible running community coming together to remember those who fought to liberate Warsaw from N**i German occupation.

I felt so much joy and gratitude just being there. I thought about how the last time members of my family ran on Polish soil, they ran in fear. Generations later, I returned to run free and that brought me a sense of joy that carried me the entire race.

Pretty sure I set a 10K PR! 😂❤️

Thank you Maraton Warszawski for giving me this experience! If I wasn’t running 100 miles a week after, I’d 1000% be flying my ass back to run the 🇵🇱🏃🏼‍♀️

Day One in Poland 🇵🇱❤️

My mom and I flew in from Germany, and pretty much as soon as our plane touched down, I put on my running shoes. My favorite way to explore a new city has always been on foot, so naturally my first introduction to Warsaw was a 9-mile adventure 🏙️🏃🏼‍♀️

I made my way down to the Vistula River, ran over the bridge, and found a park where I weaved through the paved path until I came upon a train station. I continued onwards passing museums and historical monuments (completely unaware that 24 hours later I’d be back on that same route to run the Warsaw Uprising 10K).

This was the beginning of a trip I had thought about ever since I was a little girl.

I always felt like there was a missing piece to my identity and where I came from. The only way to solve it was to go to Poland, specifically the small village outside of Lublin, Bełżyce, where my grandfather lived before the Holocaust.

The plan was to spend two days in Warsaw, then get picked up by our tour guide, Martin, to take us down to Lublin. A historian focused on Jewish history in Poland and the Holocaust, Martin would take us on a tour of Lublin and the Majdanek Memorial Site (the concentration and death camp) where my great grandfather and 78,000 others perished.

Then the final day - which would be the heaviest emotionally - would be in Bełżyce where we would meet with Greg, the deputy director of Majdanek, who interviewed my grandfather many years ago.

I’m grateful for the lighthearted couple of days we had in Warsaw and the wonderful experiences that made me fall in love with the city. That experience was essential before seeing the locations of the events that my grandfather described in his story.

This trip was a mix of emotions that I am still processing, which is why it’s taking me a while to share.

One year ago, I brought home a nervous but sweet two year old boy who was found tied to a pole outside of an In-N-Out Burger® and put on the euthanasia list at Lancaster Animal Care Center. Gidget went hard with advocating for him and was pulled by Minnie’s Mutts Dog Rescue in his final moments 🙏💕

Today he is living his best life in a loving home where he is spoiled beyond words and taken on endless adventures 🐾

Happy First , Juniper Carl! 😘

One year ago I had to say goodbye to the sweetest love I had ever known. Thirteen years of unconditional love and companionship. My heart still hurts over the loss of my princess but I smile knowing we shared the most incredible life together. Juno will forever be part of me. A truly unbreakable bond and I feel her every day ❤️🌈🐶🪽

I know she is happy knowing the space she left enabled another dog in need to get his second chance at life. I said it a year ago and I’ll say it again: the best way to honor the life and love of my beautiful girl is by opening my heart and my home to another rescue dog. Juniper encompasses so much of Juno’s spirit and I know she is looking after him the same way she looks after me ❤️

Thank you for sending the most affectionate and fun-loving baby boy. Keep shining your light down on us, my sweet girl 💕🌈🐶🪽

I had 12 hours of The Broken Arrow Skyrace 46k finish bliss before I received the news that my friend was murdered.

I look back on these images I captured on loop 2 and all I can think about how lovely it was to be so unaware. Not a care in the world besides putting one foot in front of the other and the gratitude for having the opportunity to move my body somewhere so beautiful.

Dopamine and serotonin coursing through my body. The feel-good chemicals lifting me higher and higher with every step that brought me closer to the finish. A goal I had been chasing for the last 5 years. I was finally going to achieve it.

Little did I know how short lived those feelings of euphoria and happiness would be. That not even 24 hours later I’d be teetering on the edge of a dark hole.

Trail running, to me, brings out the best in us. The best of humanity. On the trail that day, I shared miles with strangers that became friends and the companionship of an on-course volunteer who kept me distracted as I tackled quad cramps on the worst of the climbs.

The friends I made on the course stayed at the finish to watch me come through. High-fives, cheers and hugs. I was beaming!

It was one of the happiest days I had in so long. I took Juniper with me down to watch the final finishers coming in at golden hour. When I went to pick up my drop bag, I was approached by a man who congratulated me and wanted to say hi to Juniper. He asked me how it went and shared with me that he designed the course.

Everything felt so right. I was with my people. In my element. Somewhere I belonged.

The following morning, with legs sore and heart full, I was responding to Instagram DM’s. Then I opened my Facebook messages and I couldn’t believe what I was reading. It didn’t fully sink in until I got back to Los Angeles, and while I felt it was appropriate to shared the good news about my finish, I felt so much guilt for it.

How can I celebrate? How can I allow myself to feel good? I was experiencing the best of humanity while my dear friend was experiencing the absolute worst.

I was teetering on the edge and then I fell in. I sank into the darkness.

Amanda Roark Amanda Roark was one of my favorite parts about my time at University of South Florida . She was beautiful, brilliant, passionate, and an all around badass. The type of woman who would pull apart engines and get her hands dirty while wearing a dress!

We shared so many memories together. My favorite was our Zero-G flight, which we won via a contest in 2016. Getting to share that experience with her will forever be cherished in my heart. It was my last time seeing her before I moved to California only a couple months later.

And it’s how I’m going to remember her. Vibrant, excited, joyous and stoked on all of the opportunities life was bringing her way. She was a light in this world and destined to do incredible things.

The tragic ending of the life of my beautiful friend is impossible to fathom. It’s impossible to process. I’m still in shock and probably will be for a while.

I want to remember Amanda for the incredible, beautiful fun-loving spirit she was — not the disturbing event that took her from us.

I know the news will run wild with her story but before it becomes sensationalized with the name of her killer, please remember that Amanda was so much more than “his girlfriend”. She was a beautiful human with her entire life ahead of her. She was a loving sister, a loyal friend, a brilliant engineer and a light in this world.

Fly high, my beautiful friend. You’re reunited with your brother Christopher now. I’ll forever remember you this way… until we meet again 🩷🪽✨
