David Hockney! One of the greatest contemporary experimental artists. His whole life was one big canvas. Not only a brilliant painter but his “joiner” photography really lit something in me when I was a teenager. My photo teacher in high school gave us a David Hockney assignment to make a joiner photograph and at the time it might as well have been algebra - I loved it. Hockney believed a joiner photograph often gave a more real impression on what was happening than moving imagery. Also, in the late 70s-early 80s photography wasn’t considered a serious art form - so I imagine his Picasso-type cubism approach opened eyes a bit more at the time. This work often acted as blueprints that informed the composition of his paintings. I love that each image is an unaltered, too close for comfort detail, but together the photographs communicate. A very mundane scene feels like it’s alive in front of you. “There are joys in life, sometimes very small and very close to you.” RIP 🩵
