We chatted with Abigail Searls about all things wardrobe, which are so important for any production! Take a look at the Q&A session below.
Q: What is your process for sourcing wardrobe?
A: First and foremost I like to understand the vision and figure out how to make the wardrobe tell that story in a unique way. I really like to incorporate a lot of vintage, because it’s so versatile and tells a story on its own. I like to modernize it, give the wardrobe a new spin. I have an amazing friend Kim Sewald who owns the dreamiest vintage store and she has often just let me pull from her collection. () Once I have my vintage pieces pulled, I like to look over current and future trends and I’ll add modernizing touches from affordable places like Zara or Nordstrom Rack. Every job is so different, so the way I source can vary, but that seems to be kind of my signature move.
Q: Why is wardrobe important for videos?
A: Wardrobe is the unspoken story, it develops characters and the plot in a way that is visually appealing. It takes the vision to the next level. I just love everything about it and I think clients and the audience find a certain charm that helps elevate the ultimate vision.
Q: For Common Questions, what were some favorite pieces? What inspired them?
A: I found a bunch of really cool vintage jackets and tulle tops from Wear It Again Sam’s and an online Etsy shop. I think Jessica the director, Aish the artist, and I just looked at them individually and saw such a life in them. Then we kind of pieced the looks together from there. The inspiration came from a place of true diversity and inclusion, sparking joy in the flamboyance.
Q: What inspires you most about your job, and fashion in general?
A: Wardrobe is my life, I love it so so much. We can create the story, a person, based solely upon what they are wearing. I don’t totally believe in trends, but I like to look at them as guidance. Really I think what I love about wardrobe and fashion is that no rules apply, I get to have fun with it and show people some unexpected ideas. It’s just the absolute best!
