You better bring it!

When I got the assignment to photograph the Womack Sisters for the Los Angeles Times, I had the unusual opportunity to book a studio. The catch? It had to be close to where my subjects were that day, so my options were limited.

I wanted the images to nod to the long history of the Womack family while also feeling current and connected to where the sisters are today.

As I’ve said many times, the easiest way for me to tell a story is through lighting.

For the first setup, I went clean and modern, with their red dresses popping against a dark background.

For the second, I wanted something more natural. I used the studio’s existing globe lights and added an LED to shape the light without overpowering what was already there.

Then I did individual portraits with a little 70s retro vibe. One light, a white wall, and letting it naturally fall to gray.

Three setups. Three different looks. Not a lot of time.

I’m always a little ambitious when it comes to trying to pull this off.

But that’s usually where the fun is.
