The Wedding Photos They Actually Printed

A few years ago, I heard a story from another photographer that has lived in my head ever since.

He was sitting next to someone on a flight who had recently gotten married. Somewhere during the conversation, they found out he was a wedding photographer, so they pulled out their phone and started showing him their wedding gallery. Like most photographers, he admired the work. The lighting was beautiful, the composition was solid, and everything looked exactly the way you'd expect from someone who knew what they were doing.

After a few minutes, he asked a question that caught me off guard when I first heard it.

"Which ones did you print?"

The couple smiled and started scrolling again.

What they showed him wasn't the professional gallery.

It was the blurry phone photos.

Pictures their parents had taken. Pictures from friends during the reception. A crooked photo from someone sitting in the audience during the ceremony. None of them would end up on the cover of a magazine, and none of them were technically better than the photographer's work.

So why were those the ones hanging on the walls of their home?

People often think photography is about cameras. We've learned, for us, it's about people.

After 9+ years photographing weddings, elopements, proposals, and portraits across Southern California - the thing that stays with us isn't the gear (even though we have hella gear). It's the moments.... Those laughs people didn't know were being captured so they don't really hide it. The way a dad tried to hold back tears before walking his daughter down the aisle.
Those are the photographs that stay.

I hold back a lot at weddings cause sometimes I just want to join my couples in the dance floor. Other times, I simply do 💁🏻‍♀️ especially when it’s one of those songs that have you belting at the top of your lungs 🤘🏼
